Nova Summer Camp 2019, Week 3

7/5/2019

The last week of NOVA Summer Camp went as smoothly as the previous two. While the Blue Dolphins, the Yellow Tigers, and the Red Lynxes relished another week of athletic and challenging activities, highlighted by the overnight camping experience on Wednesday night on Vodno, the Green Happy Frogs continued to enjoy a vast array of fun and educational activities which provided endless entertainment, leaving no opportunities for boredom.  During the past exciting three weeks, we saw a sense of closeness, friendship, as well as trust and confidence gradually develop among all our campers. We are certain the NOVA Summer Camp program means more than just fun and excitement to your child. The wonderful experience of socializing with children from different backgrounds, cultures, and ages is unquestionably an invaluable one. Check out the photo gallery from the activities here

Nova Summer Camp 2019, Week 2

7/1/2019

With the second week of SummerCamp excitement and fun already behind us, we would like to give you an overview of the main activities and highlights. During the second week, the Blue Dolphins, Yellow Tigers and Red Lynxes had the chance to try their hands at several challenging activities: hiking on Vodno including orientational games, practicing precision and self-trust through archery, developing focus, concentration, body balance and self-control through fencing, karate, and yoga, developing team-building skills, learning how to rely on teammates to accomplish goals, and working together to overcome obstacles during the laser hunt. Campers were producing sounds during their Music workshop, and expressing their artistic skills during the Art workshop. Furthermore, during the exciting water games and sports, the campers demonstrated cooperation, fair-play and high spirit of participation. On Friday, they had a chance to relax at the Aqua park, and wrap up one more week of excitement with the Mini Olympiad. The Happy Green Frogs had a similarly eventful second week, with exciting new activities that were enjoyed by all. Their visits to the Amusement park and the outdoor activities allowed campers to build their confidence in trying to overcome new challenges. They were especially enthusiastic during the zoology master class at the Skopje Zoo, where they learned where different animals come from, and the jobs the employees at the zoo perform. They were excellent explorers of nature at the City park, wrapping up their experience with a nature walk, and they learned how to maintain balance through horseback riding. Afternoon sessions included various hands-on activities, water games, read alouds, songs and crafts.  We could not be more proud and happy to see our campers become more confident, seeing their active role by participating in all activities and making new friends. We are certain that we have another fun and exciting week ahead of us. We are looking forward to the new adventures it will bring!  Check out the photo gallery from the activities here

Julius Caesar Flash Mob in Nova

6/6/2019

Students from Grade 9 Social Studies have completed a thorough study of the rise and fall of the Roman Republic and what that consequence has meant to the subsequent ages of Europeans throughout history. This means not only the political history of the event but also how this event was remembered in the literary tradition of the 16 th century by the playwright, William Shakespeare.   The first 271 words of Marc Antony’s Funeral Oration for Julius Caesar is known as the most important speech in the English language. Mr. Stayanoff’s 9 th grade Social Science class studied the meaning of the words written in “Old English” to understand the essence of the message that Antony is said to have cleverly givento the people of Rome that made them turn on Caesar’s murderers. Student’s, MayaTeofilovska, Jana Perusheska, Kalina Spasovska and Jana Joksimovska were selected at random to participate in a “Marc Antony Flash -Mob” in the main atrium of Nova High School at the exact time of day when Caesar is said to have been killed. The short, sudden but powerful performance by these women demonstrated to passersby their competence, understanding and “ownership” of this most important work of Shakespeare.   The flash experience was a collaborative effort between Nova Social Science Department and Nova Dramainstructor, Dean Damjanovski. NOVA HS Boys Volleyball team wins 1st and 2nd place

5/28/2019

NOVA had the exciting opportunity to host the CEESA High School Boys' Volleyball Tournament. Our boys fielded an impressive two teams to the tournament, giving their all in matches against the ISL Linx's and the ISB Dragons. At the end of an intensive two full days of matches, NOVA emerged victorious. Our senior team won GOLD, beating ISB and ISL in a riveting final match. NOVA's junior team improved considerably over the course of the tournament, coming close to taking a match from the 2nd place team. In the end, though, it was the closeness of the small tournament, which was well organized and went off without any incidents, that led to the formation and retrenchment of bonds within and between the teams present at the tournament. Our NOVA families acted as gracious hosts to the visiting teams, showing them the city of Skopje and treating them like a part of the family while they were here. Because, in the end, it is the sense of camaraderie and good sportsmanship that are the hallmark of any CEESA event. So, if you pass by a member of the HS boys' Volleyball team, be sure to give them a hearty congratulations for their phenomenal victory. " Check out the photo gallery from the tournament here

Tuesday, May 7th is a working day

5/7/2019

Dear NOVA community,   Please be informed that tomorrow will be a regular school day. We also were just made aware of the government decision, which pertains to the public schools. As we have already scheduled testing sessions and many other end-of-year activities it makes it very difficult to change our schedule on such short notice. By remaining open, our focus is to provide continuity in our educational process, as our first priority.    We do realize that this decision might present a challenge for some families, especially from areas that need to cross the city center in order to get to the school, and therefore will expect some families and staff to arrive later than usual.     You can access the government’s decision in Macedonian on the following link: https://vlada.mk/node/17713.

This is a welcomed change, that we hope will make the surroundings of Nova safer for our students and the greater community. (link)

Award-winning YA author Mr. Dominic Carrillo visits Nova

5/6/2019

On May 2rd & 3th, NOVA EMS Libraries had the honor to bring award-winning YA author Mr. Dominic Carrillo in the classrooms. During his two-day visit, Mr. Carrillo met our Grade 6 to 9 students. He modeled writing workshops, answered students’ questions about his books and shared his expertise as an author and a teacher. Moreover, our students had the chance to be the first readers of Nia and the Dealer, our guest’s newest book that won't be on Amazon until June. It was wonderful to see students so excited and engaged.   In Grade 7 and Grade 8 Life Skills sessions, students were grouped and rotated among different stations sharing their ideas about the key themes addressed in Mr. Carrillo’s books such as rumors, popularity, first love, stereotypes, gender double-standards and racism. During these sessions, Mr. Carrillo had the chance to observe, listen to and interact with our youngsters.   Check out the photo gallery from the visit here

Community service in action [school, Idnina]

5/3/2019

Dear NOVA, Recently, we had a chance to spend time with the students from the Special School Idnina and deliver a donation to their institution. After raising some funds from several charitable events we have managed to purchase a computer with assistive technology for the students to use. NOVA also contributed by purchasing a much-needed trackball mouse. We would like to thank each and everyone of our colleagues for their active and selfless contribution to the Bake Sale we ran for a week, and to the leadership and everyone at NOVA for their active participation in our initiative.

Nova HS Mathematics club at the CEESA HS Mathematics competition

5/3/2019

From April 18-21, 2019, at the International school of Belgrade, Nova's HS Mathematics club participated in the CEESA HS Mathematics competition. In the last 3 months, these Mathletes were working hard solving math problems, practicing and learning new skills, new math topics, working as a team, and enjoying being challenged out of their comfort zone. Under the watchful eye and guidance from their coaches Ms. Elena V'chkova and Ms. Jasmina Dzurivska-Blazeska, our students went to Belgrade confident and excited. This year we had 12 students in 3 teams. The senior team showed exemplary math solving skills in the individual round, but even better team communication skills and managed to win a trophy for the third place in the team competition. Both junior teams were doing their best and managed to be placed at the fifth and fourth place, respectfully. During the competition our Nova students were having a lot of fun activities in which they showed the best that Nova can offer; team spirit even when the teams were mixed with other schools, competitive attitude, openness and acceptance of others, bravery when exposed to new challenges (like creating a rocket-bottle with recycled materials in a short amount of time), creativity and sense of humor, but above all, human values and empathy, general and emotional intelligence. The cherry on top was the individual competition where our 9 grader Marko Tanevski with a very high score - won gold medal in the junior part. A handful of our Nova Mathletes were also placed in the best 10 in junior or senior division. This was a great experience and we wish to continue next year the interest and success our students have in math. Check out the photo gallery from the event here
