Summer School and Summer Camp 2017, Final Performance

7/7/2017

This past Friday was a day of celebration! We let our hair down, donned our lightest and coolest summer outfits, and sang and danced to the rhythm of seasonal hits to mark the closing of NOVA Summer School and Summer Camp programme. Our Friday event was only the culminating point of three weeks of hands-on engagement in a vast variety of academic activities and sport disciplines that made for an active summer packed with learning and adventure. Thus we parted with the branches of our memory heavy with the precious fruit of friendship, fun, and growth, hoping to meet again next summer! Check out the photo gallery from the event here

NOVA Summer Camp and School [week three]

7/3/2017

Looking back with longing at our three-week Summer School and Summer Camp journey, all that we can say is that it was one of excitement, friendship, and wondrous academic achievement! While our sun-bronzed Campers embarked on a series of adventure-packed activities ranging from archery and horseback riding to double bridge crossing and overnight camping, our Summer Schoolers took a plunge in the bottomless sea of learning by engaging in a vast variety of language, art, music, dance, yoga, and computer activities. The fun peaked during our final performance, when our students had the opportunity to showcase not only their academic growth, but also the joy of sparking new friendships and rekindling old ones. The flight of time means little if it leaves no trail of memories; and although the three weeks that we spent together have now come to an end, they certainly left us many sweet memories that will keep our hearts ablaze for months until we meet again! Training, Learning new skills in teaching Theater

6/28/2017

This June NOVA International Schools hosted a training for 'Learning new skills in teaching Theater to high school students', coordinated by our very own professor Mr. Milosh B. Andonovski. The event brought together theater teachers from 15 public high schools in Macedonia for a day long training whose aim was to provide Macedonian teachers with a greater insight in the methods and teaching approach of such a course. With this kind of workshops we strongly believe that the quality of the theater courses in all schools will be improved. NOVA Summer Camp and School [week two]

6/24/2017

Just when we thought that last week's glee could hardly be outdone, we had another delightful week of fun and learning here at NOVA! These past five days our Summer Schoolers enhanced their English, dabbled in new artistic approaches, learned new dance choreographies and singing techniques, and engaged in heart-pounding music cardio exercises. To top the diversity, this Friday our youngest students leapt in a number of exciting Olympic activities, while our senior groups enjoyed boosting their teamwork skills in various character-building games. Meanwhile, our Summer Campers took to the circuit for an adrenaline-pumping kart racing adventure, developed their coordination and aiming skills through bowling, and geared up with infrared beams for a game of tactical laser tag. We are all ready and looking forward to the joys of the coming week! Check out the photo gallery from the second week fo this year's Summer School and Summer Camp here

Think Freedom project travels the World

6/20/2017

NOVA and the Fine Arts department were one of the schools in Macedonia that worked with Mrs. Edina Selskovikj on her 'Think Freedom' project that will be on display as an art installation tomorrow as a part of the Skopje Summer Festival [Skopsko Leto] 2017. This project, began in Sarajevo in 2015 and is now traveling throughout the Balkan region, as well as countries in Latin America, Asia, and Africa in order for a final presentation to take place in New York in 2020. At its core it's an installation composed of several thousand elements, sculptures that represent birds of hope, peace, and freedom. In each host city, workshops are organized with high school students dealing with culture, art, and how these venues can be used to communicate a positive message to the world. The project requests from students to provide their meaning of the word 'freedom'. They write, in any language they wish, in a form of a few sentences, which later get transcribed on the actual art installation. These messages and student sculptures join the installation together with previous messages by students from other host cities. The installation is presented to each future host city, containing the work of the preceding cities. Find out more about the art installation on this link: https://www.facebook.com/events/121976458390258/?acontext=%7B%22ref%22%3A%2222%22%2C%22feed_story_type%22%3A%2222%22%2C%22action_history%22%3A%22null%22%7D&pnref=story.unseen-section Check out the photo gallery from the event here

Our school this summer has been a true hive of activity! This past week our Summer Schoolers engaged in countless creative activities that boosted their learning and spirit in a unique way. The excitement peaked during our Olympic Day on Friday, when our students took part in a refreshing sports event brought to us by Open Fun Football Schools Macedonia. Competing keenly in a variety of fun group disciplines, they showed exquisite enthusiasm and teamwork skills. At the same time, our Campers had a chance to relax at the aqua park, practice precision and self-trust through archery, develop and maintain balance through horseback riding, and experience the power and beauty of water by kayaking. We can say that, with such a week now stored in our happiest of memories, we can only look forward to two more thrilling weeks of joy and learning at NOVA! The students, accompanied with a NOVA faculty and staff member, explored the Mediterranean Sea on a large cruise ship, docking on the ports of Napoli, Palermo, Ibiza, Palma De Maiorca and Barcelona. The trip concluded four or more years of friendship, amongst our students, helping strengthen existing connections and more importantly help create new ones. Another successful CEESA season brought to a close

5/25/2017

The Volleyball season has come to a spectacular end for all NOVA students. For the first time ever, both the girls' and boys' championship tournament was held at the same venue, in one CEESA host school. The Anglo-American School of Sofia welcomed the Supe rNOVAs to its courts in one of the largest tournaments in CEESA history. A total of eighteen teams embarked upon the path to glory, competing for the tournament gold. Both of our volleyball teams worked hard over the course of the two day tournament, with both "A" teams winning medals. Our girls' team brought home the gold medal, after arriving undefeated to the finals and then soundly defeating the International Community School of Istanbul in the Final. The boys' team also played well, narrowly missing out on a place in the Final, earning themselves instead the bronze medal. Besides medals, our athletes returned home with something more valuable, high praise from the hosts for their friendliness and positive behavior. We congratulate them all for a successful close to another exciting CEESA sports season. Check out the photo gallery the events here

Our 9 graders, Mia Miloseska and Sofia Tanevska, got a chance to meet and to exchange their experience and ideas with other students from other high schools in Macedonia, and 4 guest-volunteers from the Norwegian Red Cross (high- schoolers as well). In an interactive and fun way they learned about social responsibility and why it is important to have an active role in the society they live in. They were engaged in activities with the opportunity to develop, practice and straighten their skills like teamwork, problem solving, organization and leadership, task and time management. They were guided in promoting culture as a system of values; learning about people of different cultural and ethical background by interacting with them; trough dialogue to overcome obstacles and prejudices, to become more patient towards others, and remain open minded. 5/11/2017

This past Saturday, May 6, our school hosted, for the first time, the State Competitions in English Language for Primary School Students (grades 5 and 9 respectively), in collaboration with our partner ELTAM (the Association of English Language Teachers). Hence, on Saturday, we hosted students and mentors from all corners of Macedonia, ostensibly in total around 150 grateful and happy folk. Per procedure, the process was monitored by a member of the English curriculum team from the Bureau of Development. Three of our own Grade 11 students competed in the English Language State Competition for bilinguals, namely, Sofija Popovska, Mario Cholanchevski, and Gele Robev. Now that the official results are out, we are proud to share with our community the good news, namely that Gele and Sofija placed first and third, respectively. HS assembly April, 2017

5/8/2017

Azad Afsar delighted us with his musings about following our passions. He shared with our students, the importance of remaining open to change, and that we often find ourselves in situations that unknowingly help us later in life. His background in art has extended into graphics, animation and design and needless to say, he encouraged us all to remain persistent in the face of obstacles, that progress may not always be linear and that we should embrace all experiences as learning. He delighted his audience and tested their knowledge of the gaming world in concluding his presentation, with a number of drawings of characters - all of which our students recognized! We are grateful to have had an experienced designer provide concrete examples that exemplify our mission - seek self and others, in heart and mind, unafraid of what life may throw at you. It is the city where theatre and opera were thriving and art was redefined. Our tour began with the visit of the 900-years old cathedral St. Stephen, landmark of the city, located in the very centre Vienna. Built over three centuries, St. Stephen displays layers of Vienna's rich history and offers a magnificent view of the city. The next destination was the Belvedere Museum. Once summer residence of the mighty general, Prince Eugen of Savoy, Belvedere brings together in a typical Viennese fashion military history, modern art, and baroque architecture. The art collections in the museum bring the visitor into the world of the Viennese Modern Art. The most famous painting by the most famous representative of the Viennese Secession, Gustav Klimt, "The Kiss" symbolizes the Viennese Turn of the Century spirit with its erotic motifs and modernist rendition of classicist art. The classicist tradition is, however, still present along the spacious and magnificent boulevard Ringstraße, typically represented by the Austrian Parliament. We found more pearls of modern art but also artistic reminiscences of the Great War and its devastating consequences for the organic unity of Central Europe in the Ludwigsmuseum. We witnessed the centuries-old tradition of stage performance in the Opera House, which is still one of the most coveted stages in the world. We could follow the long history of the Habsburg dynasty, which turned Vienna into an imperial centre, in the Court Palace (Hofburg) and learn about the imperial family's leisure activities in the summer residence, Schönbrunn. Warsaw [Week without Walls]

5/5/2017

Visiting Warsaw is nothing but feeling a synergy of history and tradition together with modern European values. It is a bridge that connects Frederic Chopin and Krystina Janda, Adam Mickiewicz with the Jewish ghetto during the WW2. City of kings and poets, city of musicians and partisans. Students were walking in the center of the town and the old town, sensing both the socialist state under the Soviet Union regime and Polish romanticism with its mazurka and the waltzes. They had unique opportunity to visit the concentration camp Treblinka and learn more about a Holocaust in Poland, as well to feel the academic atmosphere in the American School of Warsaw. But at the end, students left the city under impression that Warsaw is not just a town that is patchwork of culture and nations, but rather a symphony whenever you walk through it. Whether a day or a night, it breeds with the peaceful breath of an old, still beautiful and experienced storyteller. Check out the photo gallery from the trip here

Athens [Week without walls]

5/5/2017

During the three day visit in Athens, NOVA students had an opportunity to gain practical experience through activities conducted at the University of Athens in the field of natural science. The students visited three different museums: the Paleontological, Natural Science, and the Mineralogy museum. In the Paleontological museum, NOVA students were introduced with sections of organic evolution and they were given the activity to excavate from improvised terrain, to identify and classify the bones they found. In the Natural Science museum, NOVA students were given the opportunity to observe, compare skeletal differences (human, mammal, fish, and birds) and bring evidence for connection between organisms by using homological structures (in the field of comparative anatomy). Finally, the Mineralogy museum offered a big number of minerals and minerals integrated in rocks. The students got familiar with some practical usage and importance of the minerals regarding the improvement of the quality of human life. Check out the photo gallery from the trip here

Last weekend (29.04.17), our NOVA NMUN club had the pleasure to be invited and to participate at the biggest MUN conference in Macedonia [MMUN 2017]. All of the participants did a great job and represented Nova with dignity. They worked as a team and proved that hard work and team work can lead to great results. This was the first MUN conference for some of them, but we are sure not the last because there will be many more to come. Our student Sofija Spasenovska had the honor to serve as the Deputy Secretary-General to the Macedonian Model United Nations conference 2017. The co-president of NMUN, Stefani Spasenoska was the chair of the Security Council, in which we were able to see heated discussions and receive well-developed resolutions. In the Literature Decorum [Week without walls]

5/4/2017

The week without walls excursion titled ‘In the Literature Decorum’ brought us to the bustling London which, once again, has impressed everyone in our traveling party profoundly and with the enlightenment of the contemporary and ancient in the same time. Our Bayswater Hotel located on Kensington Gardens Square enabled us to walk to the splendidly green and meticulously trimmed gardens in Hyde Park and then immerse ourselves to the splendor of Buckingham Palace and fashionable Oxford Street with its famous Piccadilly and Trafalgar Squares. The visit to Madame Tussauds was elevating; some would even say frightening; wax figures looked so real. Yet it was Globe Theatre that rose as an astonishing memento: Milka and Peter stepped back in the Elizabethan Era and appeared so authentic - dressed in replica clothes; The visit to picturesque Stratford-upon Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare abounded with new facts or with already acquired knowledge that was attired into new garments; Visit and workshops at Jane Austen’s house museum were tremendously inspiring. The splendid view from the fourth floor of the academic library at Oxford made us feel that academic excellence is attainable for everybody who works hard. The Literature Decorum in London was an eloquent life lesson that can be received only in person. Check out the photo gallery from the trip here

MS Knowledge Bowl, Krakow

5/4/2017

On the last days of April, a team of twelve MS students, accompanied by their coaches, Ms Svetlana Guguchevska and Ms Jasmina Dzurovska-Blazheska, attended the MS Knowledge Bowl competition hosted by the International School of Krakow. For our first excursive trip we stopped at rainy Vienna, where we took an afternoon to explore the city centre and marvel at the view of the Gothic towers of St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Once in Poland, we delighted in the opportunity to take the miners’ route along the labyrinths of the Wieliczka Salt Mine. At over 300 feet beneath the ground, we explored the granite-like feel of the walls and engaged in a number of hands-on activities that helped us understand the production of refined salt. We had a lot of fun! At ISK, in a tense two-day competition with the teams of six other international schools, our Supernovas showed great dedication, outstanding acumen, and, above all, impeccable sportsmanship. This was not only an amazing academic experience, but also one that resulted in many new friendships and precious memories. Proud of our MS team and their coaches! Skopje Club Scouts hike and conservation project

5/3/2017

On April 2nd, USA Girls Scouts Overseas - Skopje, Cub Scout Pack 2187 and Boy Scouts in Skopje were joined by Ambassador Jess Baily and Capie Polk Baily for a hike and conservation project on Vodno. Before the hike, the Girl Scouts recited the Girl Scout Promise and the Boy Scouts/Cub Scouts recited the Boy Scout Oath. Then they sang Scout songs and broke up into buddy pairs for the remainder of the outing. During the hike they discussed what to do if they get lost in the woods and shared the S-T-O-P survival tool. To "be conservation minded" Scouts then picked up trash in a popular recreational area. Special recognition went to Boy Scout Luke who is now a Life Scout. Congratulations Luke! Thanks to Ambassador Baily and Mrs. Baily for your support and being friends of scouting! Check out the photo gallery from the event here

Once you go to Italy you carry the Italian spirit forever

5/2/2017

Being able to enjoy the melody of the Italian language as well as meet with locals and learn few words and gestures from them, has been an experience the whole group still talks about. Visiting Ostia's seaside; tasting the delicious cuisine (especially the Italian gelato at the Palazzo del Fredo); taking the most beautiful photos at the magnificent Fontana di Trevi and learning about Vittorio Emanuele - are only some of the magical experiences we enjoyed during our stay in Rome. Last but not least, we definitely loved the Hard Rock classroom and the history of rock music class we had (especially the burgers)! You will be able to check our Reporters without Borders travel blogs and get a tiny insight from the learning experiences. Check the photo gallery from the trip here
