Summer School and Summer Camp 2016 Final Performance

7/6/2016

Our three-week Summer School and Summer Camp journey was one of excitement, friendship, and wondrous academic achievement! While our sun-bronzed Campers embarked on a series of adventure-packed activities ranging from archery and horseback riding to fencing and kayaking, our Summer Schoolers took a plunge in the bottomless sea of learning by engaging in a vast variety of language, art, music, dance, and computer activities. The fun peaked during our final performance, when our students had the opportunity to showcase not only their academic growth, but also the joy of rekindling old friendships and making new ones. The flight of time means little if it leaves no trail of memories; and although the three weeks that we spent together have now come to an end, they certainly left us many sweet memories that will keep our hearts ablaze for months until we meet again! First week of Summer School and Camp 2016

6/17/2016

The NOVA summer is a truly special season! This past week our Summer Schoolers engaged in countless creative activities that boosted their learning and spirit in a unique way. The excitement peaked during our Olympic Day on Friday, when by competing keenly in group disciplines ranging from bean bag throwing and shuffling to bowling and basketball, they showed exquisite enthusiasm and teamwork skills. At the same time, our Campers had a chance to relax at the aqua park, practice precision and self-trust through archery, develop and maintain balance through horseback riding, and experience the power and beauty of water by kayaking. We can say that, with such a week now stored in our happiest of memories, we can only look forward to two more thrilling weeks of joy and learning at NOVA! NOVA graduates bound for Holland visit Dutch embassy in Skopje

6/8/2016

12 Nova graduates who are matriculating to the Netherlands this fall, accompanied by their college counselor Ms. Irena Filkova and HS principal Mr. Viktor Novakovski, were invited and honored to meet the Dutch Ambassador to Macedonia his Excellency Mr. Wouter Plomp.  Much to their surprise, upon arrival everyone was treated to authentic Dutch apple pie and other specialties, while the Ambassador himself, along with embassy staff, were on hand to greet everyone.   The round-table conversations that took place was warm and humorous, with enough smiles to make for a very memorable morning. The students presented to the Ambassador their reasons for picking Dutch universities over many other quality overseas options, presented briefly the programs they will be attending, and attempted to describe their dreams and aspirations.  Two teachers of Dutch language were on hand to impart advice on living in the Netherlands, and embassy staff in charge of counselor affairs and education gave very practical advice on visas, student ID's and permits. Finally, our students were invited to join other alumni who are currently studying or have finished their studies in the Netherlands, to begin developing their new academic and professional networks.  Nova is grateful to the Dutch mission in Macedonia, the embassy and adjunct staff , for the hospitality and support received at this event. If this is any indication of things to come, there are great new adventures that await our graduates of 2016 going to the Netherlands.

Forum Theater at Sumnal

6/7/2016

Forum theater deals with tackling social issues such as discrimination, family, violence, and bullying. This is a form of theater that involves interaction with the audience. Forum theater plays are followed by a discussion about the social issue presented and ways in which it can be solved. After the discussion, the play is performed once again. However, this time, members from the audience have the right to freeze it, replace one of the actors, and present a way in which they would resolve the particular issue. Thus, forum theater not only raises awareness about social issues, but also teaches how to approach thinking about and solving these issues. This activity was attended by the children from SUMNAL (center for development of the Roma community) and by NOVA students. The goal is to equip participants with skills that will enable them to create a forum theater play by themselves and also make them socially active citizens. This project is headed by NOVA students, Mimi Kostovska and Tamara Barsova.

HS health and wellness presentation

5/27/2016

Preparing ourselves mentally for exams can be demanding. In supporting our learners during this stressful time, we gathered to share ideas on how to fuel our bodies and brains. Focusing on the 4 core components on physical wellness, sleep, hydration, food and exercise, our nutritionist consultant highlighted the importance of making informed and deliberate choices to maximize our chances of success, both in and out of school. Students were given samples of healthy choices including wraps and quinoa salads in order to experience how tasty healthy options can really be. Feedback from our participants indicated high levels of engagement and relevance of the information presented in a timely manner. This event contributes to our ongoing plan for wellness provision at Nova. Check out the photo gallery from the event here

HS Girls Volleyball Team Repeats Last Year's Success

5/23/2016

Upon arriving in Kiev, the NOVA team was immediately able to detect a positive atmosphere. The coaches of the school and the host families greeted us delightfully and provided everything they could to ensure that everyone would have a pleasant experience. Although we were tired on the first day, we pulled out our strength and managed to win the first game. All of the games were thrilling, with each one posing its own challenge for us. Perhaps the toughest match of all was the one with AAS from Sofia. We lost the first set, but were able to regain our spirit and act as a team in order to win the deciding set.  The host school made sure that we got acquainted with the city center of Kiev. They brought us to the most famous monuments - the Cathedral of Santa Sophia and the statue of independence.  All in all, this CEESA experience was remarkable. Besides winning the tournament again, we encountered a new and different culture. We continue in making new friends and in communicating within an international community. Kindergartners begin to learn addition and subtraction

5/14/2016

Kindergartners have started to identify addition and subtraction situations within illustrations and stories. One of our favorite strategies is to point out numbers by hearing them in the sentences, and by finding them as groups of objects in pictures and books. Then we use symbols instead of words and compose math sentences. Our young mathematicians are enthusiastic and eager to share their number stories with pictures and simple equations. MS Knowledge Bowl in Bratislava

5/12/2016

On the last days of April, a team of six MS students, accompanied by their coaches, Ms Svetlana Guguchevska and Mr Eric Davis, attended the MS Knowledge Bowl competition hosted by QSI International School of Bratislava. The first stop on our way to Slovakia was Vienna, where we took the time to marvel at the view from the Gothic towers of St. Stephen’s Cathedral, visit Goethe’s and Mozart’s landmark statues, and get a taste of local delicacies at the centuries-old Naschmarkt. We had a lot of fun! In Bratislava, in a tense two-day competition with the teams of seven other international schools, our SuperNovas showed great dedication, outstanding acumen, and, above all, impeccable sportsmanship. This was not only an amazing academic experience, but also one that resulted in many new friendships and precious memories. Proud of our MS team and their coaches! MEP Europe Day Speech Competition

5/9/2016

Europe Day held on 9 May every year celebrates peace and unity in Europe. The date marks the anniversary of the historical 'Schuman declaration'. At a speech in Paris in 1950, Robert Schuman, the then French foreign minister, set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe’s nations unthinkable. His vision was to create a European institution that would pool and manage coal and steel production. A treaty creating such a body was signed just under a year later. Schuman’s proposal is considered to be the beginning of what is now the European Union. Therefore, in celebration of Europe Day and Macedonia’s EU aspirations, the MEP office is organising a speech competition on Monday, May 9 at 3pm in the library. The speech competition will take form of an impromptu round of speeches where students will be given time to research and write a 3 minute speech on a topic given on the day. From this speech competition, the top 3 will be given the opportunity to represent NOVA at the 9th national session of the Model European Parliament set to be held in September. All who are interested are invited to attend. Sign up for competitors and spectators can be foind on this following link: http://goo.gl/forms/v0yLdvagJ7

NOVA Family Bazaar 2016

5/2/2016

NOVA's Parent Teacher Association (PTA) organized the 10th annual PTA Family Bazaar, fundraising over 4000 euros with the combined goals of improving conditions for the children and youth with impaired vision from the state school “Dimitar Vlahov” and supporting NOVA’s extracurricular activities. The event was open to the whole community with the motto “Equal opportunities for all children”. Intended for the whole family, delicious food and treats were offered at the international food tables, prepared by NOVA parents, with assistance from their respective embassies. The outdoor grills prepared by the American and Macedonian tables were responsible for more than half of the funds raised, selling hamburgers and “Destan” kebabs, attracting many hungry patrons.  On craft tables Inside the school, artisanal goods made by local craftsmen were on offer. Representatives from the beneficiary “Dimitar Vlahov” school were also present at the PTA Family Bazaar, raising awareness for their cause and presenting hand made goods created by the school’s students. The children’s corner proved to be the most popular spot, with this year's theme being “The Farm”. Children had the chance to pet animals, hug cuddly rabbits, and even ride a pony, while learning about the farm, wild life, and reptiles. There was a photo booth available where children could take pictures with some of their favorite animals, such as the albino piton and various lizards. NOVA’s focus on education is evident in all aspects of the school's activities, and the Family Bazaar was no exception. In a special book corner, children had the opportunity to enjoy reading and collecting English language books. The Bazaar's focus on child literacy was an especially rewarding aspect of the event, contributing to the fulfillment of NOVA's educational mission and vision. Throughout the event, NOVA students provided entertainment to the Bazaar guests with their dance, song, and music performances. Visitors were also treated to a special performance by  a “Dimitar Vlahov” student. Visitors had a chance to try out their luck in the Bazaar lottery. Over 120 valuable prizes were donated by the event’s respected and generous sponsors for inclusion in the lottery. During the lottery drawing, the PTA presented a 1000 euro dental voucher from Endomak to a student from “Dimitar Vlahov” in need of braces. The charitable nature at the heart of the NOVA community was demonstrated by a NOVA kindergarten student. This student won the lottery’s main prize, a 15,000 den cheque from Halkbank, and then proceeded donate the prize to “Dimitar Vlahov” school. This donation was matched by one from the Qatari Embassy. All in all,  the NOVA PTA marked the Bazaar's anniversary celebration in grand fashion,  putting together one of the best attended events thus far. The PTA are already hard at work preparing for next year’s event. We look forward to seeing all of you there Check out the photo gallery from the event here
