Youth Civic Engagement Award
4/26/2021NOVA’s student Jana is a young activist that introduced and co-coordinated the initiative called: “Un-lockDown: Zoom from your room and write on the site”, aimed at helping people with Down syndrome connect during prolonged periods of lockdown. In addition to co-organizing and taking part in the calls, Jana co-created and now regularly updates a website called “Nasha strana” (“Our Page”). The content on the website is easy-to-read, drawing on the needs and interests of people with Down syndrome, something that was lacking in North Macedonia. Jana also encouraged her high school peers to take part in a “21-Day Challenge” to raise awareness on Down syndrome and published their contribution on the site. The positive impact of Jana’s initiative was showcased via video at this year’s World Down Syndrome Day conference in the United Nations. Through the initiative, Jana has managed to address some of the mental health challenges of people with Down syndrome caused by school closures, shift to online learning and fewer opportunities to meet and socialize in person. Jana enabled people to connect and share, without compromising their safety and wellbeing.

We learned what is the difference between crocodiles and alligators (the proof is in the teeth), African and Indian elephants (hint: look at the ears) and how snakes smell food (plot twist: they use their tongues). The hippo was having a bath, and the tiger was having his nap. It was a wonderful adventure, and we hope to go on many more soon.

'Spring Closet Clean Out'
4/19/2021As we welcome spring, clearing out our wardrobes is an activity each of us partakes in, to get ready for the upcoming warm weather. Often, we find ourselves with not enough space for new clothing items, or digging up garments we know we won't be wearing in the future. In these situations, getting rid of the excess clothes would be the logical solution. Yet, choosing the right way to dispose of them can make a great difference. The 'Spring Closet Clean Out' will help you make the right decision. During the following two weeks, from 19th April (Monday) until 3rd May (Monday) we call upon NOVA students, faculty and staff to clean out your closet for spring time and help the community and the environment, by donating your unneeded clothes to those in need (with the help of The Red Cross), instead of leaving them to end up in landfills. The choice is yours to make.If you want to join NOVA student Lana Mladenovikj in this activity from which you too will benefit, bring your spare clothes and/or shoes (in good condition) to school and leave them in the box at the: HS Auditorium, HS Security Desk any day from 19th April until 3rd May.*Any type of clothing of any size (for adults/children) is welcome. Please make sure the clothes are in suitable condition for wearing.

Artistic Empowerment- How dance can express activism
3/18/2021MYP 2 Students explored the concept of activism as a means to further social justice and a compassionate community. They critiqued performances and learned how dance can empower people to express the ideas they care about. This is a great example of integration between subjects: English, Individuals and Societies class, and Dance. As a whole class, they worked with their English and Individuals and Societies teachers to write a speech about something they cared about as a group. Individual speeches were combined into a single speech that incorporated at least one line from each student's work. Throughout the Hip Hop dance lessons, students learned how to create short dance sequences based on a speech they created in English language and literature class, and Individuals and Societies class. This dance uses spoken word, music, and movements to communicate and interpret the need for knowing the role- be the voice behind the megaphone.

Equality vs. Equity
On Feminism. “I don’t know why that word is so scary to people, it shouldn’t be, because it justmeans equality.” Those are the words of the world famous actress Jennifer Lawrence. She usesthe word “scary” to describe how many people view feminism. Scary is a word used to describesomething that’s frightening, not something that helps us bring equality into this world. Mygeneration especially has this problem by viewing feminism in a wrong way. Now, you mightthink I’m only talking about the males of my generation, but no, a number of femalesmisunderstand it too. I often talk to my friends about it since I’ve been fighting for my rights as awoman since I knew what that meant. I have never thought that someone is less valuable just bylooking at their gender, but as years go by I have seen myself and other girlfriends are beingdisprivileged just because we are “girls”. That gets me angry, it gets every single one of themangry too, so we act! By speaking out, some people have found a way to make feminism aboutpraising women, while denouncing men and feminism is simply not that. The official definitionof this word is “ the advocacy of women's rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes” ,which clearly states that feminism is misunderstood. So, when a feminist would be asked to givea definition of a woman, she would say a human being of the feminine gender, but neverdescribe them as a wife, girlfriend or a man’s companion. Individuals which fear feminists, fearbeing equal to women because by admitting equality between men and women, they wouldactually have to acknowledge women and outwork them if they want to be better. That beingsaid, some women fear being feminists and some men fear feminists. But why would that be, onemight ask. It is because feminism is represented in an awful way where that way describesfeminists as women who are too loud, too aggressive, too strong, anti-men or even unattractive. That is definitely not feminism, but a mockery of feminism and that is exactly why many womendo not want to be recognised as feminists. Now, if feminism was described as a movementtowards equality like it actually is, I know many would change their minds. Feminism is livingwith knowledge that your values being female are the same as the ones of a man, so I know thatnext time I don’t laugh at my friend’s sexist joke, they will get what’s wrong with it. I know thatnext time a teacher chooses only boys for their “strength”, they will think about it. I know thatthe next Women’s day my friend won’t send me a picture of a dishwasher again as acongratulation card passing it as a joke. I am hurt by everyday such actions of my classmates, family members, friends, teachers or other adults. I am hurt when their face changes after I makea feminist comment, I am hurt when they say I am controlling after a feminst comment. I wantequality for everyone, and I think all other women do too. Now, if we change this wrong viewingof feminism, the world could change. We could all together walk towards an equal future forourselves and for future generations. So, the older generations are not our main problem, but ournewer generations learning about feminism in all the wrong ways are. We should be taught thatwomen or men of equality do not fear equality, because feminism is equality. This is not a blackand white issue, I know that, however I ask you to understand, and acknowledge all the womenworking hard and all the women who have worked hard to get us here. From Victoria Woodhull,Florence Nightingale, Simone de Beauvoir, Gloria Steimen, Ruth Bader Geinsberg, EmmaWatston and thousands more . All with different professions and interests in life, but onecommon goal, reaching full equality. Let’s not go backwards in history, let’s move forwardtogether and work towards an equal future where we teach new generations how hard feministshave worked to bring us where we are today and how hard they will have to work, to fulfill theever longing wish, for equality.

NOVA Green Initiative
2/15/2021Three of #NOVA students Vasilisa Shashkova, Eva Ristikj and Anja Pavlova became young climate change ambassadors. They aim to raise awareness on climate change through a COP26 Simulation with Young Climate Ambassadors that will be held on 20th of February.
Simulation of the UN Conference of Parties (COP26)
The first simulation of COP26 in the country and beyond will involve 20 young ambassadors for climate change who were previously trained through the online course on Climate Diplomacy.
COP26 this year will be held in November, Glasgow, United Kingdom, while the simulation will be online on 20/2/2021 and will involve relevant decision makers.
Express your interest in following the conference and receiving the preparatory materials by filling out the form. https://forms.gle/VGXhPAubzSXgPbxWA
The COP26 simulation is realized within the project Young Ambassadors for Climate Change supported by the British Embassy in Skopje. https://www.bidizelen.org/en/young-climate-ambassadors-higher-ambition/
Here is the interview made by Eva and Anja.
1. WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AS A YOUNG CLIMATE AMBASSADOR IN GOGREEN?
EVA: My immediate role as a young climate ambassador is to spread awareness on issues of climate change, providing resources and education for people in my community to voice their opinions and engage in these issues as well. Rallying others to this important cause is crucial, as government action is achievable only if more people voice their concerns. I would also thank the British Embassy for supporting young people and the project Young Climate Ambassadors.
ANJA: Definitely what Eva said. As a young climate ambassador in Go Green, my role is to educate and spread awareness on the issues that we are all facing due to climate change. My purpose and my goals with joining this program are to be a part of the solution and encourage others to join. Motivating people to all work together on this because together we are stronger. By collectively working on the surroundings we will help create a sustainable green environment for all.
2. WHAT DO YOU PLAN TO DO ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE? WOULD YOU CONSIDER IT A CRISIS OR AN EMERGENCY? TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR PLANS IN DETAIL.
EVA: Climate change is an ongoing crisis which needs immediate, yet continuous addressing. The government needs to have goals for the future and work towards eliminating local issues such as air and soil pollution. My agenda is to educate and engage my peers so they are also informed on the severity of these issues, as well as to demand government action.
ANJA: When visualizing the ideal future, I see a greener world with a plan to sustain it. This is a project that must be a paramount priority for us all. Climate change is a global emergency and it will not stop until we engage. I am currently working on projects with GoGreen and my peers from GoGreen. I am also further educating myself on the topic and preparing for the Simulation of the UN Climate Change Conference. This Conference will take place on February 20th at 11am. With this I want to further involve myself and encourage others to do so as well.
3. HOW CAN OTHER NOVA STUDENTS JOIN YOU IN THIS CAUSE?
EVA: NOVA students can join the Simulation of COP26, which will take place on February 20th at 11am, and get informed about the biggest climate event so far organized in the UK, and how the world discusses and deals with climate change. I would also encourage NOVA students to contact me personally if they want to contribute to such causes in the community.
ANJA: I agree with Eva, the first thing they can do is watch the live simulation on Go Green’s FB profile. We have to understand that as young people, we are going to suffer from the consequences of climate change. Therefore, we must act as soon as possible. Young people must be involved in decision-making processes regarding climate change. Nova is a community, and I hope that the rest of my fellow classmates will join me, and help the community create a better environment and surrounding.

NOVA Community Days 2021

The cold weather and snow didn’t keep our students away from spending a couple of hours on the ice skating ring at the Boris Trajkovski sports centre.Although we made sure to keep physically distant, socially, we enjoyed each other’s company and showcasing some cool movements on the ice. Who knew that ice skating is such a thing for a country with over 300 sunny days.We are thankful to our students that supported this activity and looking forward on enjoying each other’s company in our next school community day.Stay safe everyone,Your lovely chaperone teachers.
