Angel Tree 2013
12/27/2013Last week on December 18, five members of the NOVA High School Student Council visited the children's oncology and hematology wards as part of the Student Council's annual Angel Tree initiative. Small Christmas packages were bought and delivered to the children. We were able to visit the children in their rooms, talk and make Christmas cards and crafts with them. The children and their parents were happy that we went to visit them and all of us were happier that we could help bring smiles to the faces of those less fortunate than us.

"Matilda/Michael Jackson"
12/23/2013"Matilda” In their pristinely chaste and depravity-proof state of mind and heart, the young ones can provide the most insightful truths about life. Matilda is a larger-than-life story whose eponymous character is a child prodigy misplaced in a low-brow, unscrupulous, and neglectful family. Matilda, an avid reader of books, looks forward to going to school, but, alas, the school is run by a principle who is nothing short of a bully. Stranded in a world of dishonest and beguiling adults, Matilda does not give up: powered by the force of books, this enlightened young girl sets off to redress the injustices adults are so prone to incur. There is a lesson to learn: Once in a while, we ought to take another, fresh look at the world through the eyes of children. “A tribute to Michael Jackson” There was a very young boy who liked nothing more than to dance and sing, and that is what his did his whole life with unmatched beauty and grace. What he did was so thrilling that soon he was dubbed the King of Pop. These 12 songs are a small homage to a musical legend, Michael Jackson, whose musical legacy has more than marked one era.

11th of October Orphanage Donation and Visit
12/20/2013After a month-long toy and clothes drive competition between the homerooms in the Elementary and Middle School, we managed to collect a total of 11 big boxes full of goods. The drive exceeded everyones expectation. Once again NOVA students exhibited their generosity and willingness to make a difference in others people’s lives. High School students supported their younger peers, by doing fun Christmas themed activities with the children from the 11th of October orphanage. They made different decorations together and shared in the holiday spirit. It was amazing to witness the smiling faces of our students and their 11th of October counterparts, the former for their ability to share a moment with the less fortunate, and the latter for the fact they were able to partake in the holiday festivities

This speech competition is held for the purpose of choosing the 3-person delegation who will represent NOVA at the 4th MEP National Session to be held in February.
All efforts by the competitors in researching and speech writing were highly impressive, thus making the decision of the top three an extremely difficult task for the judging panel. International Model European Parliament Session 2013
12/12/2013From November 30th – December 7th the International Model European Parliament session took place in Vilnius, Lithuania. The international session brought together more than 200 students from 30 European countries for a weeklong event that simulates the work of the European Parliament. The Model European Parliament program from Macedonia had five delegates present and participating in the event as a result of their accomplishment on the national MEP simulation that took place this October. As representatives of the Macedonian delegation we had students from five different high schools. Our delegates were participating in the work of different Committees. Namely our delegation was composed from: § Gligor Micajkov, Josip Broz Tito high school (Head of delegation) o Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs § Mila Georgievska, NOVA International Schools o Committee on Development § Antonija Grncharovska, Georgi Dimitrov high school o Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs § Teodora Angelevska, Orce Nikolov high school o Committee on Culture and Education § Boban Sugareski, Nikola Karev high school o Committee on Foreign Affairs The delegates worked in the Committees and drafted resolutions to tackle EU current problems and challenges and they presented their work in front of each other at the GA sessions. The GA sessions were held in the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania (Lithuanian Parliament), while the venue for the Committee meetings was in different Lithuanian ministries. During the session, delegates learned a lot about the European Union by simulating the work of European MP-s and from the speeches and lectures that were made possible for them. The students also had a chance to learn about the local culture through field trips, visiting institutions and most importantly spending an entire week with a Lithuanian family in their homes. For this great experience we have to thank our lovely Lithuanian hosts, the Model European Parliament Foundation. NOVA will continue to fund and support the Macedonian MEP office and National Sessions, due to their focus on promoting a civil society and EU institutional awareness amongst high school students.

“The Sad Princess”
12/11/2013Once upon a time there was a beautiful princess who was always sad. The king and queen organized wonderful balls, and gave her exquisite presents; but all in vain. The worried parents announced that whoever made the princess smile would win her hand in marriage.Soon jesters, magicians, and performers of all kinds did their best to make the princess happy. The royal court was amazed by their performances, but the princess never smiled. One day a shy courtier who worked hard to serve his princess was carrying out his duties. What happened next changed his life and the life of the princess forever. Suddenly laughter echoed throughout the castle – could that be a smile upon the beautiful princess’s face?

NOVA hosts Global Connections XVI
12/5/2013After extraordinary seminars in the past five years in Thailand, Jordan, South Africa and Botswana, New Zealand and Colombia, this year’s Global Connections XVI will be held in Macedonia, Northern Greece and Cyprus. NOVA has the honor of hosting the latest gathering of world recognized educational institutions, under the leadership of Viktor Novakovski, Deputy Head of School. Besides a visit to Macedonia and NOVA International Schools, participants will be introduced and have a chance to spend time in schools in Northern Greece and Cyprus. The catalyst for the creation of the Global Connections Seminar were Heads of Schools, representatives of The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS) and the Federation of American and International Schools (FAIS), under the guidance of Peter D. Pelham, founding director of Pelham Associates, an educational advising group in Maryland. The first Global Connections was hosted in Botswana, and the last in Columbia. At the heart of the Global Connections Seminar is the belief that by gathering a diverse group of educators from around the world, each participant will often be exposed to educational initiatives beyond their own country's efforts. Hands On Student Involvement Conference 2013
11/20/2013NOVA International Schools had the honor of hosting the annual Central and Eastern European School Association Hands On Student Involvement Conference for 2013. Eight different international schools, each with 6-10 participants took part in this conference, the topic of which was "Modern Society." NOVA's students had four presentations on communication, youth activism, social justice and human rights in the modern world. Not only did NOVA students present, but also, our students had the privilege and responsibility of organizing the entire conference. As the name suggests, the goal of the conference is to involve the students entirely, so they were required to take full responsibility and organize the conference from scratch. The team was composed of more than fifteen NOVA students, with Nikola Danev as the student-leader/organizer, Gjentil Abazi as organizational head, Donna Urdinov and Vladimir Maksimovic as Media heads and Petar Pesev as the head of IT. Presentations were held by: Jana Cholakovska, Donna Urdinov, Mila Georgievska, Emilija Tashevska, Ana Arsovska, Gabriela Milkova, Simona Sarafinovska and others. All of the organizers and presenters were supervised by Mr. Aleksandar Ristovski, Ms. Melissa Mitreski and Ms. Bela Gligorova, who generously devoted their time to the conference. The NOVA HOSIC team would like to thank the NOVA administration, cafeteria, teachers, staff and students for their support of the conference and for the undying enthusiasm. We also wish the best of luck to our colleagues in AIS Vienna who will host the next HOSIC in 2014.

CEESA High School Boys Soccer Tournament in Riga
11/13/2013The tournament was a great experience and a first for many of our NOVA HS students. Team spirit was at an all time high, leading certain team players to believe NOVA would easily win the tournament trophy. Riga’s weather conditions were quite less hospitable then Skopje’s and this dampened the performance of most of NOVA’s players. The first game was against the International School of Belgrade. A poor start with lots of errors lead to a score of 5 to 1 for ISB. After the game a considerable disappointment was seen in the team, but coaches were able to bring back the team spirit, which resulted in a positive outcome in the follow up game against the International School of Krakow. NOVA won 3:1.NOVA was able to open the second day of the tournament with a tie, with now tournament champions the International School of Latvia. Although NOVA held the lead for most of the game, it unfortunately conceded a goal in the last moments of the second half. The following game was a heavily contested affair, with the International School of Helsinki winning the game through a late minute penalty kick.Weather conditions only worsened for the last days of competitions. However, NOVA players were unhampered in their ambition to return home with a medal. They won their first game against Pechersk International School of Kiev (PSI) by 3:1 and qualified to play for the 3rd place spot. Boys were in excellent mental state after having won their first game, bringing a lot of positive energy on the pitch and dominating the game for long stretches of time. The game finished 2:0 and the NOVA team was able to return with the bronze medal. Besides winning a medal, three of our players were selected in the All Tournament Team for their exceptional play and energy given on the soccer pitch (Kristopher Blazevski, Stojan Pandov, and Alejandro Rafael Erazo Amaya).Throughout the tournament NOVA students were friendly and cordiall to all competiting teams, and by the end they were functioning as a homogenous professional soccer team. We look forward to next year’s tournament and a chance to showcase our growth in the course of this year.

PTA Room Parents
11/4/2013Dear Parents,
One very valuable way you can support your child in school is by becoming a Room Parent. Every homeroom teacher needs one or two parents who will help them throughout the year. It is also a great way to get to know your child’s friends and their parents.
Here is what a Room Parent does:
1. Help out at class parties or other activities in the classroom.
2. Help with fieldtrips.
3. Communicate PTA information with other parents in your child’s class.
4. Help coordinate the one Bake Sale sponsored by your child’s grade.
You don’t need any experience or special skills, just a desire to get involved and help out. The homeroom teacher or our Elementary PTA Coordinator, Jennifer Mathews, will let you know what to do.
If you are interested, please let your homeroom teacher know, or contact Jennifer Mathews: Jennifer.Mathews@cru.org.
We will all be very grateful for your time and effort, and the rewards are wonderful!
Sincerely,
Brian Richards, PTA Chairperson
