Mamma Mia HS Winter Performance
12/16/2014Directed by Phyllida Lloyd and inspired by the story-telling magic of ABBA's timeless songs, this time MAMMA MIA is a NOVA student's vision of staging a sunny, funny tale of family and friendship unfolding on a tiny Greek island. It is a sincere story of a girl named Sophie who wants to meet her father before she gets married. She addresses an invitation letter to him and hopes to meet him on her wedding day. Since all dramas are someone’s secrets, the tension increases as Donna, Sophie’s mother, finds out her daughter’s secret: she already invited the father without letting her know.

Unfortunately, it’s very difficult to get there, but if you want to get a sense of it, you only need to visit our Kindergarten classroom and find out how our young explorers made Santa's workshop and several models of igloos, using sugar instead of ice cubes and a secret, but very sweet and sour, mixture for the mortar.

NOVA student attends film festival in Qatar
12/15/2014Film education and appreciation once again took centre stage at this year’s Ajyal Youth Film Festival in Doha, Qatar (December 1 – 6, 2014) where 450 young jurors from around the world took part in the five-day youth jury program – the Doha Film Experience.
Giffoni Macedonia was also part of the festival with it’s representatives in two age categories: Hilal (age 15 to 18) and Bader (age 18 to 21). The Macedonian juror in the Hilal category, was NOVA student Ana Tatabitovska. She made a remarkable contribution to the festival, and was one of the most distinguished jurors at all debates, discussions, Q & As and workshops that took place during the festival. Her participation earned her a place on the red carpet and in the spotlight, by standing shoulder to shoulder with one of the biggest Hollywood stars, Salma Hayek. The charming Salma was accompanied by the well renowned Disney director, Roger Allers (director of “The Lion King” and “Beauty and the Beast”) and together they presented their newest Disney project “Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet”.

Kindergartners plant
12/12/2014
"What do plants need to grow”? While a 5 year old child may offer a variety of answers to this question our little Nova farmers will confidently explain that plants require fertile soil, water, fresh air and sunlight to grow. They put their knowledge into action, by planting ten winter flowers on their playground, donated by Garden Center. They’ll now be responsible for taking care of them and watching them grow.

Thinking Humanity Walk
12/12/2014On Saturday, November 29, thirty-six NOVA students, led by the Teen Advisory Board students, took to the streets of Skopje with an intention to bring joy and happiness to its citizens and brighten up their Saturday afternoon. During the two-hour walk, our students handed out books, roses and home-made cookies to accidental passers-by, posted poetry on trees and gave free hugs to different people they met during their walk. This activity, a part of the project “ Little Deeds-Great Cause” , was beneficial to our students in two ways: it granted Community Service hours to the student- participants and at the same time, taught them how to appreciate themselves and the others more. CEESA HS Girls Soccer Tournament in Helsinki
11/12/2014Our high school girls attend the tournament hosted by the International School of Helsinki. Although the weather conditions were less then perfect, including snow and high winds, the girls enjoyed themselves playing against the other CEESA Blue Division soccer teams. The SuperNOVAs had an encouraging and exciting start to the tournament with a 1:1 tie against the Anglo-American School of Sofia. This game built up confidence in their soccer skills and the team became more motivated in their second game against Pechersk School International, fighting a real battle of skill and determination on the soccer pitch. The SuperNOVAs started off their second day of competition with a loss against the tournament hosts, the International School of Helsinki, but were able to end the day on a positive note with a 5:2 win over the International School of Latvia. On the last day of competition, the SuperNOVAs played a very tight game against their traditional rivals, the International School of Belgrade, which ended in an unfortunate 3:2 loss and disqualified them from playing in the 3rd place match. This did not disappoint our girls, which came prepared to secure the tournaments fifth place, by repeating their win over the school from Latvia. They led the charge throughout the game, guided by the courage and fire in their hearts, wining the game 3:1.
We feel confident that the girls will return next year stronger and wiser now that they’ve experienced the tournament first-hand. The SuperNOVAs were competitive and set the tournament benchmark when it came to warm ups, teamwork, dress code and team spirit. In conclusion, we are happy to report that the 2014 CEESA HS Girl’s Soccer Tournament was a huge success in all respects.

NOVA wins international high school soccer tournament
11/11/2014This year’s CEESA HS Boys Soccer Tournament took place in Skopje for the first time. It was a great honor and responsibility for NOVA to host 5 different international schools. The tournament was held at the national football federation's training center. NOVA’s team went through two months of intense training in preparation for hosting the tournament, with the main goal to present itself and the school in the best possible light.NOVA had an excellent start to the tournament by securing two victories on the first day of competition. The first against the Anglo-American School of Sofia (with a s score of 9:2) and the second versus Pechersk School International from Kiev (3:0). The second day proved to be equally successful for the SuperNOVAs, having won both games, against the International School of Latvia (3:0) and the International School of Helsinki ISH (2:0). These results enabled NOVA to directly qualify for the final of the tournament against the only other undefeated team, the International School of Belgrade. The game proved to be worthy of a final, with both teams having control of the ball at different stretches of the game. The score in regular time was tied, and so the heavily contested game had to be decided in a penalty shoot-out. The man of the match ended up being our goalie Vasil Petrovski, who successfully defended three penalty kicks. The SuperNOVAs were ecstatic to have won the tournament and celebrated it with a victory chant. Our team showed once again, that good motivation, inspiration, fair play, are key ingredients to achieving success.

CEESA MS Girls Soccer Tournament – Belgrade
11/5/2014This weekend, the middle school girl’s soccer team faced off against six other CEESA schools (Pechersk School International (PSI) from Kiev, International School of Belgrade (ISB), British International School (BIS) from Belgrade, International School of Latvia (ISL), International School from Helsinki (ISH), and the Anglo-American School of Sofia (AAS)) down at the BASK soccer turf in Belgrade. It was a great weekend in terms of weather and in terms of play for our SUPERNOVAS.
In the first game against International School of Helsinki the SuperNOVAs won 2-0. It was a team effort, with different goal scorers. After the game, the mounting enthusiasm took over amplifying the team spirit, and resulting in yet another positive outcome in the follow up game against the British International School of Belgrade.
Eva Lucius scored the first goal of the tournament, and Victoria Stanoeva scored five goals as well. It was a rough warm up with Sara Aliu, the goalie, almost twisting her ankle, but she toughed it out for the tournament and played strong. In the third game NOVA went up against BIS and scored four goals. Nova won 4-0. Although the SuperNOVAs lost the game against the International School of Belgrade, they dominated the field for long stretches of time. The SuperNOVAs went down 5-1, but scored quickly before halftime by Eva Lucius who scored a strong goal as she dribbled through the defense. The girls fought hard and never gave up, they persevered and made us as coaches extremely proud. Katja and Melisa came in strong to keep the ISB girls out and Victoria and Eva had a good game with 1 goal for Eva and 3 other close chances. The fourth game against ISB was won by the Dragons, though with good amounts of playing time by all the girls on our team. However, the girls’ zeal and dedication guaranteed that we would return home with a trophy. The following game was a heavily contested affair, with NOVA winning the game after scoring 3 penalties. The girls played a tough semi-final against ISL, showing great fight and dedication. They showcased their talent, stepped up, and played a great game. Ana Gonzales played amazing defense throughout the tournament, especially in the semi- finals, being in the right place at the right time and shutting down the other teams’ players.
NOVA returned with a bronze medal. Besides winning a medal, many of our players were commended on their exceptional play and energy given on the soccer field, Eva Lucius (the captain) and Sara Aliu (the goalkeeper); Viktoria Stanoeva and Ana Gonzales for making a huge effort on the field as well as Katja Hadzievska, Melisa Peksevim, and Julia Curry. Milka Kitanovska, Rosanna Prevete, Gabriella Butler, Sofia Tanevska, Masha Samsonenko, and Anne-Sophie Zolow were a huge support on the field, and throughout the games. The girls had a great season, played together as a team, and demonstrated strong willpower and character. As coaches we are extremely proud of them for their determination, progress, sense of fair play, good sportsmanship, and attitudes throughout the whole season and tournament. All of this is a testament of the commitment and heart our players have.
We appreciated all of the support from parents, teachers, students and host families throughout the tournament. Special thanks to Ms. Kitanovska, Ms. Curry, Ms. Butler, Ms. Gonzales, Ms. Tanevska and Mr. Curry for kicking around with the girls and helping them improve during their free time. You and your families brightened up our days and made this trip even more worthwhile. It was the most successful middle school girls team ever, and absolutely an honor for us as coaches to coach such a wonderful group.

Theatre Class Performance Exam
10/29/2014A Performance Exam took place on October 27th, in the High School Drama room. Students attending Theatre class presented their solo and group performances. Performances ranged from musical acts to silent etudes, from comedies to dramatic monologues, which students wrote themselves. Several students attending the Filmmaking class were also present, in order to make their casting decisions for their up-coming film projects. The audience was filled with teachers following the performances, as well as, students providing support to their classmates. It was an interesting learning experience for the Theatre students in terms of dealing with stage fright and performing in front of an audience. Applauses filled the room, after each performance, and could even be heard in the hallways.

Poetry Reading in the Library
10/22/2014
Once, Robert Frost said: “Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found its words. ”Eight students turned international author’s thoughts into words in the Library yesterday at our First Poetry Reading of the year. As part of the “October-Month of Foreign Languages” Library Program, the students read poems by international authors both in their original language and English. We all enjoyed the poetry reading as we rarely get an opportunity to hear that many languages all at one place. The librarian would like to thank the students who participated and the Teen Advisory Board members for taking an active role in the organization of this event and would also like to encourage other students to sign up for other Library events as they are not only educational, but fun as well.
