Grade 4 students are enthusiastic writers and scientists
3/31/2015
Grade 4N students are avid readers and engaged writers. Reading gives them the opportunity to travel to far away places and unknown worlds without having to leave the comfort of their classroom. Fourth graders also enjoy the writing process and always make sure to choose the most vivid and descriptive words, as to paint a picture in the reader's mind. For their latest writing assignment, they first read biographies of famous people to get familiarized with the genre, and afterwards wrote their own autobiographies.
Besides being avid readers and writers, our students are also fond of science and scientific experiments. Their latest experiment was intended to to confirm their knowledge of static electricity and electrons, by using only a few basic items. They made a hypothesis, observed what happens when electrons move from one object to another, and wrote down their observations and conclusions. They explored how balloons interact with each other and other objects when rubbed with a wool cloth. Science is fun when you get to do some great hands on activities and projects.

Grade 2 students visit the dentist
3/20/2015Both grade 2 classes had a short field trip to the dental department at Neuromedica clinic. Our host, Dr. Stipica Popovski, was kind enough to help our students learn more about teeth, how to take good care of them and answer the many questions they had for him. Some students were brave enough to sit on his dental chair and get a dental check-up. We’re happy to report that the check-up concluded that all students have healthy teeth. At the end of the visit students received a bag of Colgate products as a present.

Grade 4B students teach each other about catastrophic events and weather
3/18/20154B students showed great enthusiasm in learning about catastrophic events and weather. They were all assigned a particular event to research and prepare a presentation on. As true scientist, they asked relevant questions about the catastrophic event/weather, and during computer class researched it using multiple internet resources. They all created power point presentations containing text, pictures, diagrams, and having cited all their relevant sources. In science class students throughly enjoyed themselves playing the role of teacher, presenting the researched topic and answering all of their classmate's questions.

MS boys win gold!
3/18/2015What an amazing journey! We are happy to report that NOVA's MS basketball team won all matches played during this year’s CEESA basketball tournament, including matches played in Sofia, as preparation leading to the tournament. The tournament took place in Riga and the SuperNOVA's secured first place with a final win against the Anglo American School of Sofia with 38 to 25. We congratulate the International School of Latvia for organizing an excellent tournament and their overall hospitality. Besides the official tournament competition our students had a chance to socialize with their friends from other international schools and each other. This was a wonderful experience for students and coaches. We look forward to competing again next year and ensuring the CEESA MS basketball trophy remains in Skopje.

NOVA hosts CEESA HS Girls Basketball tournament
3/12/2015This year’s CEESA HS Girls Basketball tournament took place in Skopje for the first time. It was both a pleasure and responsibility to host 5 different schools and 55 students from 24 different countries. The tournament was held for two days at the "Boris Trajkovski" sports center and for the final day of competition at the “Kale” sports center. After three months of hard work and preparation the SuperNOVA's were ready to represent their school in the best possible way.
The team had a rough start with losses in both matches during the first day of competition. The first match was a close encounter, losing it by a two-point differential, against the Quality Schools International from Bratislava (16:18). The second matchup was a less competitive encounter against the International School of Helsinki. The SuperNOVA’s were off to a good start on the second day of competition, winning a very close and exciting match with a one-point margin over the Pechersk International School (PSI) from Kiev (22:21). The second game was lost with one of the tournament contenders the Anglo-American School of Sofia. In between matches a shooting competition for players took place and our team captain Gala Tomovska won 3rd place.
To qualify for the 3rd place match-up, it was necessary to defeat the best team of the tournament the International School of Belgrade. Although our girls fought gallantly the end result (30:47) was in Belgrade’s favor, and allowed them to progress to the final of the tournament, which they ultimately won. The last match and 5th place game was against PSI from Kiev, and for a second time in a row, in what was a closely fought game, our girls lost by only a point. All was not last, as other teams recognized our teams effort, fair play, and respect on and off the court; voting to have us receive the Sportsmanship trophy, an important award at this level of competition.
The tournament was an amazing experience for the team. It was a good example that success is measured by effort, and that achievement follows only after very hard work. The team is already looking forward to next year’s tournament to showcase its growth and self confidence.

HS boys basketball teams return victorious from Belgrade
3/10/2015This year's CEESA HS Boys Basketball Tournament was hosted by the International School of Belgrade (ISB). NOVA participated in the tournament with two instead of only one team. After two months of intense preparation NOVA went to the tournament not only to defend its first place from last year, but also to present the school in the best possible light. NOVA 1 team had an excellent score in the round robin phase of the tournament, with four wins and only one loss, while the NOVA 2 team won two matches and lost three. These results enabled NOVA 1 to directly qualify for the final of the tournament against the only other undefeated team, the International School of Belgrade (ISB), whilst NOVA 2 team secured the third place and silver medal match-up against the International School of Helsinki (ISH). It was a huge success for both teams at the end; NOVA 1 won second place and silver medal, and NOVA 2 the much sought after Sportsmanship trophy, ending up in fourth place. Learning About Three-Dimensional Shapes
2/24/2015The kindergartners can easily find the three-dimensional shapes around them. They can explain that solid shapes are fat, not flat; a cone is like a hat; a sphere is like a ball; a pyramid is like a building tall; a cylinder is like a can of pop and a cube is like a dice you drop. These young mathematicians will confidently describe solid shapes using proper math vocabulary, such as: faces and edges. Also, our kindergartners can apply their knowledge about the three-dimensional shapes in real life. For example, if you ask why builders do not use sphere-shaped bricks, they will explain that both cube and rectangular prism-shaped bricks can be stacked. Though, they love to create spheres with bubbles:-).

CEESA Knowledge Bowl competition in Ljubjana
2/11/2015
Following three months of intensive preparation, the brave NOVA Knowledge Bowl team traveled to Ljubljana in Slovenia to compete against other CEESA teams. We are happy to report that one of our team secured the silver medal at this international competition, while the other finished 4th place overall. As happy as we are for the well-deserved trophy, we are even more grateful for the opportunity to meet students and teachers from our sister schools, to work and have fun together, and enjoy what the city of Emona (Ljubljana's Latin name) has in store for its visitors. Same as last year, Jana Cvetinovska's experience and motivation proved invaluable for our victory. On par with Jana, Sofija Paneva did an excellent job answering most of the natural science questions. Winged by his enthusiasm, Sergej Pazdrijan served as a perfect captain for the second team, while Anastasia Moussoura demonstrated her broad knowledge of classical culture and mythology. Both Borjan Venovski and Tamara Barsova scored important points for their teams and acquired the invaluable experience of participating in an international knowledge competition.
We have every reason to believe that this success will help us in securing a strong team in the years to come.

MS MathCounts competition in Zagreb
2/10/2015This year’s Middle School MathCounts Competition held in Zagreb the 6th and 7th February, proved to be another successful endeavor for NOVA, having won third place in both the team and Jovana Cvetinovska in the individual competition. The achievement is even greater when having in mind that this year’s competition included a larger number of schools, teams, nationalities, and difficulty of math problems. The competition totaled 57 contestants, 19 teams, coming from 10 international schools, 6 NOVA students (Jovana Cvetinovska, Borjan Gagovski, Emiljian Cuzmici, Samuel Barton, Marija Simjanoska, and Meho Dacic), accompanied by two teachers, Natasa Kardula and Jasmina Dzurovska-Blazeska. One of the highlights of this year’s competition was when fellow teammates and good friends, Borjan and Emil, went against each other in the individual competition. Being prepared by the same teachers, Jasmina Dzurovska-Blazeska and Nikolce Petrovski, having the same amount of math practice (2 times a week in the last 5 months) you would expect the same outcome, but Borjan’s speed was crucial in him progressing further.Outside the competition, we had a lot of fun playing Ice Breaker games and performing Team Building activities with students from other schools. We also visited a Math Exhibit, toured Zagreb's Old Town, and learned about the history of the city from our tour guide. The heavy snow could not stop us from discovering this beautiful city, shopping for souvenirs, riding the city trams, and visiting the biggest and oldest Cathedral in Zagreb. Our host school American International School of Zagreb did an excellent job in making us feel welcome.

MS girls basketball team win it for NOVA
1/28/2015
We would like to congratulate our MS girls basketball team for winning first place at the basketball invitational tournament organized by the Anglo-American School of Sofia. In preparation for the tournament, the team played a friendly against QSI Skopje, winning the game by a wide margin. This game proved to be useful preparation for the upcoming tournament.
Besides NOVA, teams from Sofia and Bucharest also took part in the tournament. NOVA was represented by two teams, with some girls on the roster scoring their first competitive points ever. While for the players on the Yellow team this was a useful first experience, the more experienced White team players had the ambition of the winning the overall tournament. They started with an easy victory against the team from Bucharest. The follow up game was against a public School from Sofia, which proved a more challenging match up, with our girls securing a well earned victory of 25 to 19. On the second day of matches, our Yellow team continued to accumulate experience, while our White team managed a third win to secure their place in the final. In the final, Nova defeated the host team from Sofia, in what was a very close game. The invitational tournament proved to be great preparation for the final tournament of the season to take place in Finland. We wish our girls the best of luck.

Learning about the Periodic Table of Elements
1/27/2015We learned about the Periodic Table of Elements by playing cards, spelling out words using the chemical symbols, through poster and PowerPoint presentations, by filling out worksheets and crossword puzzles, drawing cartoons, coming up with chemical jokes, and even designing T-shirts featuring the elements. At the end we realized Mendeleev’s periodic system wasn’t so difficult to understand after all.

8th graders learn about gas laws
1/27/2015Grade 8 explored air pressure and how a barometer works by experimenting with hot water, balloons, and syringes. The students discovered the connection between pressure, volume and temperature. As usual in scientific inquiry, the experiments didn’t always go as planned, but we learned from our mistakes as well as from our successes. It was a great example of how we have fun and learn at the same time.

Grade 2J Young Physicists
1/22/2015We asked, “How can you make your tea or milk stay warmer for a long time?” “Which insulator will keep it warm longest?’
For the experiment we filled 5 plastic bottles with hot water, and wrapped each one in a different insulator using sand, paper, 100% cotton cloth, foam, and bubble wrap. We put each bottle and insulation in a metal can. We used one more control bottle without any insulator. We predicted which insulator would work the best. Then we measured the temperature of the hot water every 15 min. for 2 hours to see which kept the water hot the longest.
The conclusion is that foam is the best insulator. In two hours the temperature of the water dropped only7 degree Celsius, unlike the sand insulator where the temperature of the water dropped 23 degrees.

Kindergarten Scientists
1/20/2015The super scientists from kindergarten can confidently explain that liquids do not have a specific shape, but they take the shape of the container they’re poured into. Also, on Friday, January 16, using household materials like milk, food coloring, and dish soap, these young students created an awesome chemical reaction and a beautiful explosion of colors. This was an unforgettable hands-on learning experience, and what is most important, it was easy and fun.
