First week of Summer School and Camp
6/22/2015The NOVA summer is a truly special season! This past week our Summer Schoolers engaged in countless creative activities that boosted their learning and spirit in a unique way. The excitement peaked during our Olympic Day on Friday, when by competing keenly in group disciplines ranging from bean bag throwing and shuffling to bowling and basketball, they showed exquisite teamwork skills. At the same time, our Campers had a chance to practice precision and self-trust through archery, develop and maintain balance through horseback riding, and experience the power and beauty of water by kayaking the rapids of the Treska. We can say that, with such a week now stored in our happiest of memories, we can only look forward to two more thrilling weeks of joy and learning at NOVA!

Grade 4 poets
6/8/2015The young poets from 4B used the writing process to compose poems using several poetic devices and figurative language like alliteration, simile, metaphor, and personification. After they published their poems and illustrated them, they read them with fluency and expression in front of the whole Elementary School during the Honesty Assembly. We all enjoyed their different voices and comparisons of Honesty to a tree in a forest, raindrops in a desert, art, music notes, Canada geese, and to a pregnant teacher:) Honesty is indeed the best policy!

HS girls volleyball team wins gold in Belgrade
5/20/2015This year's CEESA HS Volleyball Tournament was definitely one of the most exciting and challenging ones. We trained hard in preparation for the tournament; however, the main reasons for our success was the amazing team spirit we developed and the support we gave one another. As much as we were motivated to win, we enjoyed each game and had a lot of fun. We won all round robin matches in strait sets and were happy to play in the final, same as last year. The final game was certainly very challenging, when playing against a difficult opponent such as the International School of Belgrade. We were fortunate to have played our best game in the final, by staying focused, playing smart, and leaving our hearts on the court.

English language essay writing workshop for 9th grade students
5/12/2015In the past few months essay writing workshops for 9th grade students took place as part of the collaboration between the Skopje public schools and NOVA's Service Learning program. Our three wonderful American exchange students from the YES program, Natalia, Emily and Faber, under the professional guidance of one of NOVA's college counselors, had a unique opportunity to teach essay writing tips and tricks to their peers from the public schools: Dimo Hadzi Dimov, Vlado Tasevski, and 11th of October. This was a part of their Service Learning activities during their one-year studies at NOVA. They found their role as teachers both enjoyable, for the ability to share their knowledge, and challenging, for their attempt to bridge the cultural and communication gap.

Letter of appreciation
5/7/2015
Dear Nova leadership,
I just want to take a minute to tell you what a great experience we have had at Nova this year. Our four boys have been in four different schools in the past four years with the associated transitions. All have been good in different ways, but the transition to Nova was much easier and smoother than we anticipated. They have all made friends and enjoyed learning.
Nova does a wonderful job in embracing the diversity of the student body and one of the first things we enjoyed was International week early in the school year. Another advantage at Nova is the extensive exposure to the fine arts with the music, dance and art programs. The winter performance was an impressive display of this emphasis. Our oldest would say that from his perspective, the highlight this year has been representing Nova on three different teams in three different countries - basketball in Bulgaria, Math Counts in Croatia, and Knowledge Bowl in Tirana. Each trip has been an incredible (and new) experience for him.
These are some of the these reasons we are most thankful for our experience at Nova. However, none of this would be possible without Nova's greatest strength, the excellent teachers. They are a gold mine. Although we have only been here one year, we have experience with over a dozen of Nova's talented teachers. Each is passionate about teaching, eager to tailor their teaching to the students' individual learning styles and interested in the emotional, social and academic development of their students.
Our third grader has had his best school experience here at Nova, largely thanks to Ms. Milevska. She is an extremely gifted teacher whose love for her students encourages them to do their best. Even in the areas where they struggle, she focuses on the positive so that the students feel like they can and will succeed. She knows her students so well and uses their individual passions and abilities to get the whole classroom excited about learning.
As room parent for fifth grade, I see first hand how Ms. Platz and Ms. Cvetkovic take a team approach to teaching and capitalize on their complementary strengths. They use diverse and creative ways to teach students with different learning styles and backgrounds. They also view each student as an individual and both have the wonderful ability to use each student's strengths in the classroom.
With our seventh grader's recent experience in Knowledge Bowl, we have gotten to know Mr. Davis. His passion for teaching and literature come through in each interaction. In leading the Knowledge Bowl team, not only did he encourage the students to work hard and strategize, but he also presented a balanced view of competition that valued good sportsmanship above winning. We especially appreciate the time he and other teachers invested in extracurricular activities, making unique experiences like Knowledge Bowl possible.
Ms. Markovska, Ms. Evans and Ms. Stevoska manage a large class of young and diverse students so skillfully that it looks easy! Our quiet first grader has flourished in their classroom and has developed the confidence to contribute to classroom discussions. This spring, they have also worked very hard to successfully provide a seamless transition from one primary teacher to another.
We could not be more positive about our experience at Nova this year. We are grateful to each of you for the role you play, and especially to the teachers who have been so wonderful for our boys.
Sincerely,
From Nova Parents

Young Botanists
4/16/2015Sunlight and spring breezes were ideal conditions for our young Kindergarten botanists to plant seeds, observe and record their findings; and learn that plants live in the soil, and need water, sunlight and air to grow. The kindergartners expertly identified the roots, stem, leaves and flowers. They were eager to learn more, and giggled when we discussed how tasty the plant’s roots, such as carrots, potatoes and radishes can be. The grand finale was the wonderful classroom display where our botanists classified all the roots, stems, leaves and flowers we eat! Thank you to our parents who brought in dozens of flowers. We are especially grateful to Mrs. and Mr. Buleski for bringing seedlings from the market, as well as to Mrs. Ana Kamceva who awarded our hard work with tasty cookies.

Week Without Walls 2015 (Service learning trip in Skopje)
4/12/2015I feel tremendously inspired and grateful for having experienced all of these volunteering projects, and for having the opportunity to meet amazing people and children who in spite of having to deal with hardship (illness, poverty, old age), are still able to smile and look on the positive side of life. I feel my knowledge of institutions dealing with the less fortunate has significantly improved, especially in regards to their main goals and the way they operate (from learning more about cerebral palsy to grasping the concept of human rights). Through these experiences I improved my ability to be more patient, understanding and effective. One thing that makes me happy is the fact that this was not just another excursion but it was an experience worth remembering. Although I spent very little time with the young and elderly in need, I experienced strong feelings of joy and motivation, together with sadness and disappointment. After these experiences, I'm motivated to make a difference, and believe that everyone in this world has the ability to do so, because at the end we are all equal and we all have the same rights regardless of our skin color, our believes or our problems.

Week Without Walls 2015 (Dante’s road – Italy)
4/10/2015Since this was my first field trip as a NOVA student, apart from the learning component about Dante’s life and the Florentine culture, I expected to have a positive experience that would create lasting memories. From the first day we walked through the city centre, I couldn’t stop admiring the beautiful, renaissance and modern Italian architecture. I enjoyed the game “scavenger hunt” which was a clever way to get us to explore Florence on our own and to get to know it better with lot of fun and creativity. Through this task I began to fall in love with this city. The following days were devoted to visiting Dante’s house and other sites important to his life and his relationship with Beatrice, as well as the renaissance life in general: the Baptistery San Giovanni, the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Duomo, the church of Santa Croce with the Monument to Dante Alighieri etc. I will never forget when we hiked up to Piazzale Michelangelo and enjoyed the spectacular view of the city. On the last day we finally visited the inside of the Duomo and climbed the bell tower (with its claustrophobic 414 stairs!), but at the end it was well worth it, since the view from the top was breathtaking.Overall, I could without a doubt say that this trip fulfilled and exceeded my expectations. Last day we could not leave the “centro storico” and I will definitely miss Florence. On the other hand, after this trip I will definitely try to visit it again.

Week Without Walls 2015 (Agritourismo-Italy)
4/10/2015Although the trip was rather long… I found it to be bearable, and rather an adventure! Getting there was an amazing relief! It was absolutely beautiful!
The first day we visited the cheese and wine farm. The whole 2 kilometers of the walk to the actual complex was lined with beautiful hills and sights… who would want to leave? We were led around and were allowed a special insight into the workings of the industry and the things that make them and the region unique!
One of my favorite things we did while in Italy was most definitely the cooking with our chef! We were able to make our dinner with our own hands and it was such a blast, especially with the special instructions. We made pasta, and learned techniques for different aspects of the kitchen.
The last day we visited Florence. Though we were only there for a short time, it was extremely beautiful and filled with history. I wish we just could’ve had more time to visit and roam.
Overall, I was very happy I attended this excursion; I enjoyed the sights and the opportunity to take pictures immensely.

Week Without Walls 2015 (Political ideologies, Eastern Europe)
4/10/2015My Week Without Walls trip included a tour of two of Eastern Europe’s finest cities. However, this was no ordinary tour. In Belgrade, we focused on the Yugoslav regime that lasted from 1945 to 1991. We visited the key governmental institutions while also attending a critical lecture concerning the downfall of Yugoslavia. Nonetheless, we also explored the historical side of Belgrade by observing the various underground sites and looking down at the beautiful city, with the Danube river, from the Kalemegdan. We also managed to cover a little bit of Physics at the Nikola Tesla museum. Even before arriving to Budapest, the city seemed fascinating enough on its own. I was astounded to find out how strongly the Hungarians retaliated against their Communist rule, while also certainly respecting it, as shown in the Memento Park. The city’s architecture and infrastructure proved to be like no other. I was pleasantly surprised by the capacities of both cities. Overall, the trip, although exhausting, was very informative and significantly influenced my views. The trip was, without a doubt, a massive success, that I would love to go on again.

Week Without Walls 2015 (Art Colony in Mavrovo)
4/9/2015My experience was that it was a very positive, fun and productive experience, and it is the best field trip that I have been on in all my years of schooling. The entire atmosphere was very relaxing and even so I managed to get a lot of work done, because the way in which it was organized, the process of producing artwork was made to be a very enjoyable process. Aside from being productive it was also fairly educational as I went out of my comfort zone to paint landscapes (something which I have never done before) and learned the different techniques of achieving a believable landscape effect. Regarding the accomodation, the hotel was very good, the staff were professional, the rooms were clean and the food was very good. This field trip also provided a suitable atmosphere for forming new friendships, and that aspect of it was what I loved the most about the trip. Overall, it was the perfect field trip experience for me. It had just the right amount of education to make the trip worthwhile but not tiring, and it provided many opportunities for socializing and forming new friendships. ( Viktor Ivanovski )

Week Without Walls 2015 (Survival trip, Plackovica)
4/9/2015For the Week Without Walls I took part in the survival trip that went to Plačkovica, This trip was a new experience for me because it was my first time to go hiking and the first school excursion I took part in. This trip offered many activities that one does not normally do. Almost all of the activities were outdoors and were very interesting. The activities included wall climbing, setting up tents, walking on a rope, hiking and zip lining. On the other hand there were indoor activities like cooking and cleaning. During the trip we hiked a lot but the hikes were fine. The hikes were very exhausting and long but we got to see new things. We spent 5 days in the middle of nowhere and we had our phones for a very short period of time so we had to resort to going outside or talking to other people face to face for entertainment. I can easily say that the best part of the trip was getting to know the other people better and the teachers that accompanied us were great and very supportive. Overall the excursion was a fun new experience and we acquired new set of skills because of it.

Week without walls 2015 (Science trip, Belgrade & Zagreb)
4/9/2015Our trip was packed full of different experiences! The first stop was the Nikola Tesla Museum in Belgrade. We had an extensive and fascinating introduction to the life and work of Nikola Tesla, with lots of well-explained practical demonstrations of his inventions, as well as how they paved the way for future scientific innovations that are commonly used in everyday appliances and electronic devices. A very enjoyable and educational experience followed by a great rest on the meadows near the Kalemegdan Fortress, topped off by sating our hunger with a batch of well-deserved burgers and fries at McDonalds.
The next morning in Vincha Institute of Sciences, each student was assigned to attend one of five workshops. We found the staff to be very kind and they explained the entire material in an understandable manner that instantly sparked our curiosity. An incredible experience, amazing!
In the spacious building of the Aeronautics Museum, our guide showed as a big number of planes dating from various periods. The last day of the trip was marked by a visit to the Technical Museum in Zagreb. The museum is so massive that we could visit just a fraction of it. The most exciting sections were the coal mine in the basement, the planetarium and Tesla room. With so many things to see in such a little time, this excursion was very successful.

Student-led conferences
4/6/2015In both Elementary and Middle School we held Student-led conferences, where students showed and explained in detail their portfolios to their moms and dads. These conferences put the focus on the student and encourage them to take ownership of their work, as well as allow parents to better understand how their child learns. The opinion surveys showed that most parents overwhelmingly agree these conferences are highly beneficial in many ways.

Robotics competition in Prague
4/1/2015The Robotics experience this year was a growth project with new members, new ideas and new supplies. The team traveled to Prague in February for the First Tech challenge with their meticulously designed robot and competed valiantly against 12 other teams. It was a hard fought battle of engineering wits and the HotBots held their own. Although they did not place, the team came away energized and ready for a renewed commitment heading into the 2015-2016 school year. Everyone made new friends and experienced the wonderful hospitality from the International School of Prague. It was a welcome adventure and valued experience. Next year’s team expects to be a strong contender and there is already anticipation for the competition and the possibilities ahead.
