1/19/2017Cub Scout Pack 2187 supported the U.S. Marine's Toys for Tots campaign again this year, collecting toys for area children without parents. Thank you to Staff Sergeant Randy P. Carreon for your willingness to include the Cub Scouts in your philanthropy! Service projects, like Toys for Tots, are one way Scouts can keep their promise "to help other people at all times."
To support the initiative, Cub Scouts collected toys at our chartered organization, NOVA Elementary School; delivered them to the Marines at the U.S. Embassy in Skopje; helped gift wrap the presents; and, joined Santa Claus and the Marines to bring them to the children at SOS Children's Village. Special thanks to NOVA educator and former Girl Scout, Jennifer Endres, for helping the boys with the toy collection and delivery!

Learning about exotic minerals
12/13/2016Eighth graders and their science teachers, Ms. Milena Stojanovska and Ms. Jasmina Dzurovska-Blazeska has a guest presentation by Mr. Ray Power, a mining engineer and scientist who works with the extraction of different exotic metals in refineries around the world. He discussed the practical applications of the periodic table, and how metals are used in everyday objects such as cell phones. We were amazed to learn that more than 60 different metals are used in one cell phone. Students used a portable X-ray fluorescence analyzer to check for the presence of metals in different objects like jewelry, cell phones, key rings etc. They used their analyzing and inferring skills to discuss the results of this real time elemental demonstration. One student was disappointed to find out that her ring was not made of 100% silver. At the beginning of the presentation when students were asked "Who wants to be a scientist?" only a few hands were raised. But at the end, Mr. Power’s explanations and enthusiasm inspired more than a dozen students to express their desire to become scientists.

Cub Scouts gather to celebrate holiday season
12/6/2016On December 4, Cub Scout Pack 2187 gathered for a Pack Meeting at NOVA Elementary School. "Celebrate" was the meeting's theme to honor the season of hope and good thoughts toward others. One of the 12 points of the Scout Law is "Cheerful." This month, the Cub Scouts explored how to be cheerful, even when things don't go our way. Scouts and their families painted ceramic ornaments with guests from Keramika Cafe and learned about proper flag care from the U.S. Marine Corps Detachment. To spread cheer, Scouts serenaded the Pack with "Jingle Bells" and "Rudolph, the Red-nosed Reindeer" and heard from the Marines about the Toys for Tots campaign and the importance of giving to others. To promote the merits of good sportsmanship and fair play, the Cub Scouts played "Blob" and "Ballooney" to understand how to best to work as a team. Thank you to our guests and all that contributed!
We also recognized four Cub Scouts (Neo, Marx, Theo and Justin) for earning their Bobcat rank at the December meeting. Congratulations Cub Scouts!

In a presentation that was both whimsical and formal, FiRC students had the opportunity to trace the development of a popular literary and cinematic trope, from its inception as Haitian slave folklore, all the way to the contemporary writing of American authors, such as Max Brooks. Ms. Whitrock demonstrated to FiRC students that no subject matter is outside the scope of academic inquiry. Students considered their own knowledge and analytical propensity for tracing the development of popular culture using the tools provided by their research and writing related classes at NOVA.

CEESA HS Girls Soccer Tournament
11/21/2016This year, the Supernovas hosted the annual CEESA HS Girls Soccer Tournament.
Games were played between schools from six different countries, the grass fields were appropriate and the matches were officiated by professional referees, in accordance with the CEESA regulations. The games were played on a round robin basis and consist of two halves of 25 minutes each, with a 5 minute break between the halves.
The Supernova soccer team was made up of 14 girls; most of them not experienced soccer players. However, what these girls lacked in experience was made up for in heart and sportsmanship.
The CEESA HS Girls Soccer Tournament was a very exciting event; the sheer determination and will to succeed displayed by the girls was a victory in itself. They felt they had improved and walked away with smiles and a sense of pride for their hard work. The passion for the sport, the contribution and the efforts is what made the 2016 girls' soccer season a memorable one for all of us, the girls and the coaches.

More than just a Soccer Tournament
11/10/2016The NOVA Middle School Boys recently returned from a CEESA Soccer tournament in Riga, Latvia that can be described as anything but ordinary. Upon arriving to Riga, the team realized that this would not be an ordinary soccer tournament. The first day of the tournament showed that the boys were going to be playing a different type of soccer that day: snow soccer. With over 15 centimeters accumulated (and still more coming) the boys realized they would have to learn how to play the sport in a whole new way. Despite the near whiteout conditions the NOVA Boys showed resilience in the face of adversity. Even with our best efforts we won only one game out of three that day. The following morning the boys had the opportunity to play at the Olympic Center in downtown Riga. We played our first game of the day and narrowly lost to the host school. After a brief respite we prepared for our last match of the tournament against the International School of Riga. It was an intense game of back and forth soccer. The NOVA soccer boys played hard but nevertheless we found ourselves down 3-1 at halftime. After a deep talk about resilience and relentlessness the NOVA boys came out with renewed intensity to tie the game at the end of regulation. Our team engaged in a emotional penalty shoot out filled with tension, frustration, and finally happiness. The NOVA boys pulled away with the win to cap off the tournament. All in all, our students had a lot of fun, made some new friends, experienced Latvian culture and had a once in a lifetime experience.
