Workshop, Nova alumna Donna Urdinov

In the past two days Nova students had the opportunity to learn first hand what are some of the career prospects for them in the art-entertainment industry. Our very own alumna Donna Urdinov from the class of 2014 that recently graduated from the Gnomon School of Visual Effects gave both a theoretical and a practical lecture/workshop based on her education and experience. For two days students learned about modeling, animation, game design, and the upsides and downsides of working in this field. We truly enjoyed Donna's visit and we are looking forward to hear more news about her future projects and career prospects. International Jazz Day

On the 30th of April, more than 200 countries on all 7 continents celebrated the global influence of jazz music. Jazz has become an international art form that for more then a century, has helped sooth and uplift souls of million of people. It is a music that brings people together, conveys the message of peace and unity and a perfect language that everyone understands. Our school was a part of this global celebration, and this year as well we continued the tradition of bringing jazz music closer to our community. Check out the photo gallery from the event here

CEESA MS Knowledge Bowl competition hosted by NOVA

On April 27-29, 2018 Nova will host the CEESA MS Knowledge Bowl competition. We are excited to welcome the participating schools:- Anglo - American School of Sofia, Bulgaria- Anglo - American School of Moscow, Russia- Tirana International School – Tirana, Albania- American International School of Budapest, Hungary- International School of Belgrade, Serbia- American-International School of Zagreb, Croatia We would like to invite all parents and students interested in the event to join us on Friday/Saturday for the tournament. Nova Family Bazaar, 12th edition

On Saturday the 21st of April, the traditional Nova Family Bazaar took place for the 12 consecutive time. The Bazaar is one of our favorite events in the school, because it brings together not just the Nova community of students, alums, families, faculty and staff, but also many other old and new friends. The PTA alongside Nova put together this amazing event where one could enjoy foods from all over the world, win amazing prices at our lottery, get the opportunity to watch performances from our students, and listen to some good live music from our bands. This year we hosted artisans from all corners of the country, we had a petting zoo for the kids and some real fun activities aimed at our youngest audiences, and for the first time ever we hosted four amazing artists for our art silent auction. One novelty that seemed to attract most attention this year was our 'dunk tank', where all members in the bazaar got the opportunity to 'dunk' one of our Nova members in a tank filled with some icy water, all of course for a good cause. Like every year the funds collected from the Family Bazaar will be donated to a charity that the PTA has chosen for that year. This year we are contributing the funds to the University Pediatric Clinic - Department of Oncology. Check out the photo gallery from the event here

NYU Abu Dhabi representatives visit Nova

Yesterday, April 19, we had a visit from representatives of NYU Abu Dhabi, where currently two Nova Alums are pursuing their undergraduate students. Our Grade 10 and 11 students were able to learn more about what makes this particular NYU campus distinctly diverse, as well as more on the admission pathways to a successful application.    

'I did it my way', 6th Rotary Conference

The 6th Rotary Conference for professional orientation of young people, titled “I did it my way”, took place on Saturday, April 14th, from 11 am to 3 pm at NOVA. Over 200 high school students, from dozen of schools in Skopje, Vinica and Kocani attended the event. At the opening session they were able to hear first-hand accounts of how Venera Novakovska, founder of NOVA International School, Lidija Gjorgieva, Macedonian fashion designer, and Dzijan Emin, Macedonian musician composer, and conductor have chosen their prospective careers and achieved success. Afterwards, students were able to select a specific field of study, and talk to professionals within the career area, all members of the Rotary Club Skopje-Kamen Most, who shared their own life and work experience in order to assist students in making these life changing decisions. This was the sixth time the event has been organized by the Rotary Club Skopje-Kamen Most, in cooperation with NOVA, and over the years it has been attended by over 800 high school students from 20 high schools, who have evaluated it as extremely successful and useful in terms of choosing their future profession. Philosophy for Children

As part of UNESCO's "Philosophy for Children" (P4C) program, which recommends early exposure of children to doing philosophy in order to stimulate and nurture the development of their critical reflection skills, on April 12th, the Macedonian Philosophical Society in collaboration with EMS NOVA, as a part of the 8th Филозофски Филмски Фестивал / Philosophical Film Festival conducted a day-long P4C practical demonstration. The experienced P4C practitioner from Denmark, Mr. David M. Larsson, effectively transformed two elementary school classrooms into "Room for Wonder", by having our gr. 2 students articulate their definition of friendship and its essential traits, culminating in the students' use of the friendship "ingredients" to "bake the friendship cake"; followed by an inquiry-based gr. 3 class inviting students to creatively imagine how and why did the world and humanity begin, resulting in an art exhibition curated by student comments. The conspicuous "shared wonder" experienced by the participating students, and teachers alike, strongly attested to the pedagogical value of the learning-by-doing instructional method and its overall positive educational effects on our students. Art careers for the entertainment industry

Dear Nova students, Nova International Schools would like to invite you to а workshop that would give you a glimpse into the different types of careers that you can pursue in the film, video games, or animation industries. The focus of this two day workshop will be to help students set themselves up to achieve their goals should they want to pursue such a career, as well as help to answer any questions they might have. The workshop is going to take place in the Nova High School, on the 25th and the 26th of April starting from 2:30pm until 3:30 pm. The leader of the workshop will be our very own Nova alumni Ms. Donna Urdinov, a graduate from the Gnomon School of Visual Effects, Games and Animation. Middle School Science Fair featured on NASA TV!

We’re thrilled to announce that a reportage from our Middle School Science Fair will air on NASA TV this Saturday , April 14th from 10:30 am. It will be rebrodcasted on Sunday, April 15th from 6:30 pm and Monday April 16th from 5:30 pm. Let your friends and family know so they can watch our young scientists present their amazing science projects.

6th Rotary Conference for professional orientation (Live-stream)

Please be informed that the 6th Rotary Conference for professional orientation of young people, titled “I did it my way”, will take place this coming Saturday, April 14th, from 11 am to 3 pm at NOVA.  During the event, members of the Rotary Club –Skopje will share their own professional experience alongside several eminent guest speakers with high school students from all over Macedonia, particularly focusing on sophomores and juniors, in order to help them decide on their future career path.  This event has been traditionally organized for the past five years and has been visited by over 600 high school students from 20 high schools, who have evaluated it as extremely successful and useful in terms of choosing their future profession. As spots for the event are limited and will be filled on a first come first serve basis as applications arrive, interested students are encouraged to submit their applications to info@nova.edu.mk at their earliest convenience.    

Week without walls, Novi Sad-Budapest-Belgrade

The driving question of our trip was how the Ottoman and Habsburg imperial legacies have shaped the cultures of Belgrade, Novi Sad, and Budapest, and how the citizens of these cities relate to their national, ethnic, religious, cultural, and linguistic identity. We sought answers to these questions at strategically chosen locations and conversations with locals. Groups of students gave presentations at each of the locations, thus adding a personal view of the history and culture of the location. The snow and harsh weather during the entire trip could not break the invincible spirit of the group, who marched relentlessly through fortresses, museums, and castles. Our first station was Novi Sad, where we visited the Petrovaradin Fortress and learned about its construction by the Habsburg Military as defense against the Ottomans; the Austro-Turkish Wars on the territory of Vojvodina; the horrors of WWII; and the surviving multiethnic society of Vojvodina. The next stop was Budapest, where we visited the Tomb of the Ottoman dervish and poet Gül Baba, who died during the Ottoman siege of Buda; then we learned about the medieval history of Buda and the Ottoman and Habsburg periods in the city castle and the Hungarian Museum of History. In the afternoon we visited a thermal bath, a delightful relict of Ottoman times, and in the evening went to a coffee house, the perfect synthesis of oriental and Central European cultures. The last destination was Belgrade, where we went to the Military Museum of Serbia located in the old fortress of Kalemegdan. The exhibition in the museum witnessed the many wars and conquests on Serbian soil and beyond, from the Middle Ages all the way to the Yugoslav wars of the nineties. On the very last day of the trip, one group of students went to the International School of Belgrade and interviewed students from the school. Check out the photo gallery from the event here

Dutch Universities' Mini-Fair in Nova

Yesterday, March 29, we hosted our first Dutch universities mini-fair, with admissions and recruitment representatives from 6 institutions (Tilburg, Erasmus, Twente, Leiden, UCR, and the HotelSchool in the Hague). We had more then 60 people in attendance, over the course of an hour and a half, parents and kids across all grade levels. The reps were also able to meet with Ambassador Plomp at the Embassy, and discuss further collaboration tactics. Thus, a really productive visit. Check out the photo gallery from the event here

Week without walls, Rozhen [Bulgaria]

“Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the amazing WWW trip to Rozhen, Bulgaria. Its five-days mission to explore the Universe and seek out new perspectives.......” The trip Discover the Universe in Rozhen, Bulgaria was a very productive and meaningful learning experience. Our students had the opportunity to visit the National Astronomical Observatory in Rozhen, the largest Observatory in the Balkans. Our journey started with an introductory lesson about the astronomy equipment. The students explored the work of the telescope cameras and learned what the astronomers do with the pictures from the telescopes. We were lucky to have the clear sky and enjoy the night vision. The sky turned into a huge blackboard. By observing the night sky we were exploring the location of different constellations and star clusters, and we have learned about the evolution of stars - how the stars are born and how they die. We have learned how to determine the distances between the objects in the Universe. After each session, our wonderful and very skillful lecturers were open for quite curious discussions and they manage to satisfy the inquiring minds of our students. Besides the knowledge gained, we have enjoyed the amazing nature and the impressive landscape of the beautiful mountains around, as well as the delicious Bulgarian kitchen. Week without walls, Survival Adventure

Words like fulfillment, joy, excitement, cannot even describe what we felt while on our trip to Plackovica. Our adventure was filled with hiking (during heavy rain, snow and even blizzard), rope hanging, rock climbing, fixing tents, first aid classes and a lot of cheering, and comments such as: "Go teacher, go, you can do it!”. And we did it, we did every silly thing they wanted us to, making us feel full of life and pride of their courage. The students cooked, washed dishes and took great care of the household. We fully enjoyed the wilderness of the mountain, and the unpredictable nature, where, even with the extreme weather conditions, we felt really safe, because we relied on each other like a true team. This week taught us all, great survival tactics and skills, acquired through practice and repetition, guided by the great First Aid team and team of professional mountaineers. We also laughed a lot, goofed around, and felt extremely happy. Plackovica created a bond that can never be broken. To our brave, silly, brilliant students: Thank you! The latest edition of the Nova Writing Pearls book is now available for download on NOVA's website. The NOVA Writing Pearls book is all about creativity and imagination. This book is one of the numerous, prominent and significant testaments of NOVA students’ vital capacity to be inquisitive and curious. This edition of Writing Pearls, hosts 7 short stories and 4 literary bites. Through their work, students showed to be independent thinkers, asked unusual questions, searched through forms and patterns and visualized alternatives. http://www.nova.edu.mk/writing_pearls.aspx

Week without walls, from Sarajevo to Durbovnik

On the first day, we visited the small town of Visegrad in Eastern Bosnia Herzegovina famous for its bridge on the River Drina. Mr. Janchovski explained the history of the city, as well as the importance of this bridge which inspired the famous writer, Ivo Andric, to write a Nobel Prize for Literature winning novel by that name. Day two brought us to Sarajevo where we enjoyed a walking tour through the city with a tour guide who was enthusiastic to share with us his experiences of overcoming war and maintaining a positive philosophy of life like so many people in this country have done. We saw the street where Gavrilo Princip initiated the World War I with his assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife, Sophie. We saw the mix of Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian architecture as they influenced the culture and tradition of this town. We tasted the local cuisine and met a local coppersmith who was kind enough to demonstrate his craft for us. The tour guide took us to see the museum of the winter Olympic games held here in 1984 on our third day of this adventure. We also witnessed the underground tunnel that was used by the locals when Sarajevo was under siege 1992-1996 by the army of Republika Srpska. We watched a documentary about that war and it initiated many questions and inspired critical reflections among our students. To make the day better, we went to the National Park on Mount Igman where we saw the spring of River Bosna and experienced a fairy tale setting with lots of snow. On day four, we were astonished by the atomic shelter called Tito's Bunker, near the city of Konjic, on the Neretva river. We learned that it took 26 years and billions of dollars to build, but that it was only designed to shelter 300 people for a period of 6 months. The students were bursting to ask about how this bunker was made more than 50 years ago, what the purpose for it is now, and many other good questions.. We had a discussion about nuclear weapons, the Cold War, and the Nonaligned Movement. Next was the city of Mostar, a beautiful town, home to the old bridge and the story behind it. We had an amazing tour around the city and learned how many nations and religions lived here in peace throughout history. The small town Blagaj was next where we visited the ancient Dervish tekke, beautiful monastery under a cliff, and where the spring of the River Buna bubbles away. The fifth and final day brought us the figurative cherry on top of our excursion: the most beautiful city in the world, at least according to our group, Dubrovnik. The guide enchanted us with stories and legends about the history of this special city as well as the freedom and sovereignty that the citizens of this town have always felt. We learned about the famous denizens of Dubrovnik such as Marin Drzic, a Renaissance playwright and prose writer along with Roger Boskovich, a physicist, astronomer, mathematician, philosopher, diplomat, poet, and theologian. We had the most amazing time despite the cold weather, snow, rain, and heavy winds. This Week Without Walls experience was chaperoned by Mr. Tihomir Janchovski and Mrs. Jasmina Dzurovska-Balzeska. Week without walls, Cluj [Romania]

The trip to Cluj, Romania was a wonderful and memorable experience for all our students. The students explored the amazing opportunity to do service learning and experience a different culture by interacting and sharing their knowledge with their Romanian peers. The first day, we went to the Transylvania College where the students had the opportunity to visit classes and find out more about the educational system in Romania, their peers’ life and the learning opportunities that they have. We were all pleasantly surprised by the employees and the students who welcomed us warmly and organized different activities for us in the school, among which was the Public Speaking Workshop. We felt, at every instance, that they truly cared for us, both the kids and adults, and did their best to make this trip memorable for us. The next day, we went to Dobrin, a commune located in the Salaj County, Romania. We visited the one and only school there, where our students worked with the Impact Club on building a playground for the little kids that study at the school. Other highlights were the visit of the Botanical Garden and the main square and Cathedral in Cluj, and building a life-sized chess together with the students from the Transylvania College. Overall, this trip definitely has become the most adventurous and stunning journey of our kids’ lives-something they will remember for many years to come. EMS SPRING PARTY

Dear parents, on TUESDAY MARCH 27th from 3pm-5pm the NOVA PTA will have a EMS SPRING PARTY and school bake sale. The PTA will feature games, Easter themed treat, delicious food and Easter eggs for the egg hunt. You are invited to support this event by donating some baked items ( store bought, sweet or salty). Please drop off your donations at the EMS cafeteria on TUESDAY March 27th. Donations are accepted throughout the day and at the time of the party and are sincerely appreciated!We are looking forward to seeing you at the party.

Week without walls, Power of creation

NOVA students had a chance to explore their creativity and to create jewelry, magnets and badges with polymer clay at the two day workshop that was held in Public Room and organized by the Nova high school. During the project students were given chance to paint murals in the library “ Drugarce” and to enrich this public library with their art. Nova students visit HC Vardar

"Eat healthy, exercise daily, stay fit and positive!" That's the advice professional players from HC Vardar gave to NOVA students on their planned visit to one of their training sessions. The 5th grade students, accompanied by their teachers Ms. Guceva, Ms. Kardula, and the principal Mr. O'Neill, had a personal warm-up session with one of the best coaches Mr. Roberto Garcia Parondo and Ms. Marija Lojanica. Imagination training in Nova

“IMAGINATION TRAINING” was a series of creative workshops led by the team of Buden Tetar for the children of Nova International Schools. The children worked on various projects, exploring the possibilities of different materials and techniques, but foremost exploring their own imagination and developing artistic skills, team spirit and creative confidence. Evening of classical music in Nova

Young musicians from all three Nova divisions - Elementary, Middle and High School, showcased their instrumental skills on our 7th Annual Classical Evening. The topic of the concert was "Instruments of the Future" and the special guest of the evening was the exquisite Macedonian piano player Dunja Ivanova. We also had an art exhibition of elementary and middle school students as well as a short presentation on couple of newly invented instruments. Check out the photo gallery from the event here

NOVA and the HS Boys Basketball team had the honour of hosting the 2018 CEESA Basketball Tournament. NOVA athletes played against five visiting teams over three days, securing a 2nd place finish in a tense finals match against Istanbul International Community School. NOVA players distinguished themselves in terms of the level of skill displayed throughout the tournament. Similarly, NOVA students and families who attended the games left an indelible mark as audience members committed to cheering on all the competitors. Learning the Cyrillic alphabet

The busy bees from our first grade classes have learned all the letters from the Cyrillic alphabet. Our students have been reading for a while now, and now they have started writing during our Macedonian language classes. The class quickly agreed that this is a serious achievement that requires a celebration! Therefore on the 14th this month the first graders celebrated their success by having some popcorn, drinking some healthy juice and receiving their well deserved reading awards. Pack Ski Trip, Cyber Chip, and Raingutter Regatta

On Saturday, February 24, Pack 2187 went skiing! Cub Scouts and their families traveled together to Zare Lazarevski Ski Center in the Mavorvo National Park for a fun-filled day on the slopes. With the help of experienced ski instructors, the Scouts learned skiing fundamentals and how to stay safe on the mountain. Special thanks to Arben and Val Jusufi for organizing and supporting this enjoyable winter event! On Sunday, March 11, With the help of their Akelas (parents), Cub Scouts earned their Cyber Chip, by learning internet safety best practices and how to be responsible online. The Scouts also sang songs about preparing for the Raingutter Regatta. Then, Cub Scouts shared with the Pack the importance of water and how we must work to conserve this precious resource. On your mark, get set, BLOW! With tremendous help from our Pack Committee Chair and Flotilla Admiral, Kris Mitchell, and other adult leaders, we launched our third annual Raingutter Regatta. Cub Scouts built and decorated their trimarans and learned about good sportsmanship. Cub Scouts received awards for their workmanship and the creativity of their vessels. The Cub Scouts raced their "lung-powered" sailboats through a series of race heats; then each den winner raced in the Pack Championship. Jac (Bear) came in third and a new Scout, Lukas (Wolf), was second. While Justin (Webelos) with the fastest boat was first! Congratulations to all our Scouts! Volleyball season

We would like to inform you that the volleyball season for our HS volleyball teams for boys and girls will start the week of 12 - 16.March.2018. The first practices are scheduled for Monday, March 12, at 3:15 at FORZA. All boys and girls from grades 9 - 12 are invited to join the volleyball teams. Participation is free of charge and coaches don’t make cuts. Basketball player Marcus Ginyard visits NOVA #DoubleDribble

Besides an interest in learning more about their favorite school subjects, high school boys also have a deep and abiding love for the game of basketball. Players who came to participate in the 2018 CEESA HS Boys Basketball Tournament had the opportunity to share their passion with a person who holds a love for the game that exceeds even theirs. Marcus Ginyard, a professional basketballer, came to share experiences from an almost decade long professional career in basketball. Mr. Ginyard visited NOVA to take part in the opening ceremony for the tournament, giving an empowering speech to NOVA athletes and the visiting teams from five other countries on the end result of dedication to practice, and the importance of learning from defeat. Mr. Ginyard even gave his time to the athletes in the form of a special practice session, in which he stressed the importance of focusing on the fundamentals of basketball. The lesson, of course, could be said to extend to any activity that our students take part in: you are never "good" enough to stop working hard at the things that got you to where you want to be. The sixty student athletes who competed at the tournament will have returned home with the experience of this tournament, and with the benefit of Mr. Ginyard's experience. Collaboration between the Italian Embassy in Skopje and NOVA International Schools

We are very happy to report that the collaboration between the Italian Embassy in Skopje and NOVA International Schools continues this year as well. Last Friday, 9th of March, another valuable contribution to our Libraries was made. The Italian Ambassador Mr Carlo Romeo donated 30 titles to our Libraries. We would like to publicly thank His Excellency Mr Carlo Romeo and his wife Mrs Antonella de Furia for always supporting our teachers and students and their dedication to spreading the Italian language and culture in Macedonia." Anchors away! It’s Raingutter Regatta time! Join your fellow scouts for an afternoon of fun.  When: Sunday, March 11 Where: NOVA ES  Time: 1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Following are the Pack 2187 Raingutter Regatta rules. Please read them with your child. Encourage your Scout to follow the rules and also speak with them about sportsmanship. CEESA Division 1 HS Basketball Tournament for Boys hosted by NOVA

From March 8th until 10th NOVA International Schools will host the CEESA Division 1 HS Basketball Tournament for Boys. We will be live streaming the games from the tournament. NOVA MS Movie Night

On the 7th of March [Wednesday] the NOVA MS will organize and host a movie night for our students. The choice for the day is the Oscar nominated movie 'Hidden Figures'. The US Embassy is bringing this film experience to us and MS student council is organizing the event as well as selling snacks and drinks. The movie night will be on Wednesday, March 7th from 18:00 to 20:00 in the EMS auditorium. Bring a blanket, pillow, or just your curious self to learn about these great women in history. MS Girls Basketball Tournament, Budapest

From March 1st to 4th, NOVA’s MS Girls Basketball team participated in the CEESA Basketball Tournament, hosted by the American International School of Budapest (AISB). Besides the SuperNOVA's and AISB’s team the Budapest Blazers, other teams included in the tournament were the Istanbul Dolphins, the Belgrade Dragons, the Prague Falcons and the Warsaw Warriors. Our team was young but very enthusiastic and prepared for the new experience. Marija, Mia, Jada, Prina (all 6th grade), Sare, Tuana, Ekaterina, Vesa, Sara (all 7th grade) and Mariah (8th grade) were prepared to give their best! During our first match against the Istanbul Dolphins, we showed great energy and easily won the game, with a result of 18:9. After a short break we played against the well prepared Warsaw Warriors who took advantage of our inexperience and won. The last game was crucial for our placement for the next day’s round of match-ups, and the Budapest Blazers seemed ready for us. The favorites were well prepared, but our girls fought like lionesses. We won the game, and finished the first day successfully with 2 wins and 1 loss! For the second day the girls were sore but even more determined to play well. We started against the team with no losses, the Prague Falcons, aware that this team would most likely play in the finals. Surprisingly, we were on top until the 4th quarter, but towards the end, the girls became tired, we lacked enough substitutions, and unfortunately lost the game. This match took a lot of energy out of us. Luckily, we pulled ourselves together for the Belgrade Dragons and confidently won and were for sure in the game for the 3rd place, playing against the Warsaw Warriors. By this time, the SuperNOVA girls were tired, hurt with small injuries, and without enough substitutions. They played much better than the first day against the same team, which was still insufficient for a win. The girls left their hearts on the court, accepted their defeat with dignity and ultimately won the 4th place in the tournament. Being part of this tournament and playing versus other much more experienced teams was a great learning experience for our girls. We are proud to say that the SuperNOVA girls demonstrated great enthusiasm, skills, and team work on the basketball court and gave their utmost. Check out the photo gallry from the tournament here

Basketball star, Mr. Marcus Ginyard visits NOVA's basketball team

Nova International Schools is proud to announce that on the 2nd of March 2018 in support of our basketball program we hosted Mister Marcus Ginyard, a professional basketball player who currently plays for the first league in Macedonia. Mr. Marcus joined a regular NOVA high school basketball team training, and shared his immense international experience with our students. He was giving them tips and tricks on how to improve and how to understand the game of basketball better. Both the coaches and the players loved this visit and are looking forward for the next training session with Mr. Marcus which will be for all participants of an international tournament NOVA is organizing from March 8th until March 10th. PTA coffee morning, March 2018

Sometimes we need to be reminded of the factors that impact on our own resilience, and that of our own children. This morning our Elementary and Middle School Counselor, Julie Rice, shared with our High School parents, ways in which we can improve our resilience. Given the mobile nature of many of our families, it is important to have a core set of skills to rely on when our setting changes. We need to be flexible in our perspective, and accept that our identity shifts with time. Resilience can be developed over time; let’s celebrate that and find new ways to support each other! NOVA MS Boys Basketball team in Sofia

Over the past weekend our NOVA MS Boys Basketball team traveled to Sofia, Bulgaria to compete in an international basketball tournament. Our team had been working hard on perfecting their skills, athleticism, and discipline throughout the course of the season. This tournament was a chance for the players to showcase their growth as players and as individuals. Over the course of the two days our players should resilience and relentlessness winning five of their six games. NOVA had the opportunity to compete in the championship match against the host school. The NOVA boys played a smart and disciplined game, but unfortunately lost by just two points. The NOVA team won 2nd place at the tournament, together with the much sought after sportsmanship award. More importantly, all coaches, teachers, and opposing players that we talked to raved about how well behaved and mannered our players were. We are extremely proud of our players' work and commitment. NOVA Writing Pearls, 2018

The promotion of NOVA Writing Pearls, Edition-2018, was a testament of NOVA students’ vital capacity to be inquisitive, curious and ready to confront the future challenges. This edition of Writing Pearls, hosts 7 short stories and 4 literary bites. Through their work students showed to be independent thinkers, asked unusual questions, searched through forms and patterns and visualized alternatives. Red Cross Projects in NOVA

This year for the 4th time NOVA is a part of the National Red Cross program - RCA-PHV - Red Cross in Action- Promotion of Human Values. The main objective of RCA-PHV is inclusion of young individuals (high schoolers) form different ethnic background in mutual projects for development of a common understanding, tolerance and culture of dialogue. In the past two weeks 14 of our students have attended three different workshops where they had learned about the history and the activities of the Red Cross and the importance of being socially responsible. Jenesis is a student in NOVA coming from the state of Connecticut in the United States. Teachers VS Students Pick-Up Basketball

The NOVA HS Boys Basketball team will be hosting a light game of pick-up basketball at Mondano Sports Center this Saturday at 3PM. The team will be spending the early afternoon fundraising in City Mall and in Centar for the "Sensory Garden" project at Dimitar Vlahov school. After their community service, the boys will be enjoying the (hopefully) good weather with an hour or two of basketball. It would be a pleasure to have faculty stop by to play with the HS team. A lot of the boys would like the chance to go up against their teachers, especially as they prepare to host the CESSA Tournament for the event.If you are interested in participating, you can let Mr. Cunningham know, or you can simply stop by on Saturday for a few games.Everyone is welcomed.

MS Valentine's day party

Middle school students celebrated Valentine's day with a party. Everyone enjoyed the music and the MS Band performance after which the party was traditionally closed with a karaoke show. Check out the photo gallery from the event here

NOVA Robotics club, semi-finalist [CEESA competition, Romania]

This years the CEESA robotics competition was held in Bucharest, Romania. There were 13 teams from 7 countries, including our very own Unit 42 from Nova International Schools. The competition this year was titled "Relic Recovery". The task of the robot was to stack boxes in columns and as a final mission to rescue the relic and balance on a board. Overall the competition required a great coordination between the drivers as they are both required to drive the robot. After the preliminary rounds our team managed to move to semifinals, where due to problem with electronics our robot stalled. However, the small problems that occurred didn't stop the team from having a great time at the competition bringing back more knowledge and skills for next year. Middle School Valentine`s Party

Blue and Gold Banquet, a celebration of scouting

On Sunday, February 11, Cub Scout Pack 2187 organized its third Blue and Gold Banquet to celebrate scouting. Thank you to the banquet committee, chaired by Milica Mitchell and Julie Boyett, for organizing a great event. Following are some photos of the celebration. The event began with Cornhole (a classic American game) and a photo booth, followed by a flag ceremony. The Pack then enjoyed pizza and homemade desserts, including chocolate cake. Grade-level dens also performed songs, skits and told jokes. During the performance we learned that the BSA Cub Scout program began 88 years ago in 1930, and how many seconds there are in a calendar year. Hint: You don't need a calculator! Cub Scouts were then recognized for the completion of their achievements and received pins, emblems or belt loops, including the Messenger of Peace award for those Scouts that helped with the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots program. Parents and unit leaders were also recognized for their contributions to the unit. Thank you for all you do for scouting! The Scouts learned about sportsmanship by playing tug of war and competing in a balloon popping relay. Sportsmanship will be reinforced in next month's Raingutter Regatta, scheduled for Sunday, March 11. The banquet concluded with a flag ceremony and clean-up, emphasizing the importance of recycling. Hand and bath towels donation

Dear NOVA Community, please support our initiative to collect hand and bath towels.The donation will go for the Special Institution for People with Learning Disabilities in Demir Kapija. Because of lack of towels when residents are washed, all too infrequently, they are never dried. Your donation will be much appreciated.

Cognitive Coaching came to Nova!

With over 50 professional educators in our High School library, Nova faculty and administration engaged in the foundation course for Cognitive Coaching. We explored energising conversation techniques to enable creative planning, reflecting and problem-solving. We developed our active listening strategies and strengthened our understandings about the importance of trust, interdependence and community. NOVA MS Choir, annual CEESA event in Sofia

From January 31st to February 4th, NOVA participated in the annual CEESA Middle School Choir for the first time. This year, the event is hosted by AAS Sofia. A choir of almost 100 students from 10 different international schools collaborated and practiced intensively within a few days. The choir members gave their best and performed in 2 amazing concerts. In this wonderful first experience, our students became more skillful in choir singing and had the chance to make new friends from all over the world. Check out the photo gallery from the event here

Boris Trajkovski-NOVA Scholarship Program in the Media

NOVA participates at the CEESA Math Counts Competition in Budapes.

From the 1st until the 4th of February 2018 NOVA participated in the annual CEESA Math Counts Competition for Middle Schools hosted by the American International School of Budapest. At the competition there was a total of 7 schools participating and around 60 students. The NOVA representatives at the event were: Matej Stojmanovski, Stefan Alexandru Savu, And Jegeni, Tamara Peshevska, and Elena Zhakova. Our MS Math Counts team won the third place in the team round showing great team work and very good math skills, gained through the last couple of months under the supervision of their teachers Ms. Iva Ristovska Petkovska and Mr. Nikolche Petrovski. Also, our Matej Stojmanovski ended up among the top ten individuals, and after the exciting Countdown round, won the 7th place. During the competition we visited a science museum, discovered the science behind some famous experiments, we went to a cultural tour in the beautiful city of Budapest, and had fun playing VR games with students from many other countries. NOVA hosts municipal physics competition

NOVA was thrilled to host 70 talented students and their physics teachers of the five Karposh Municipality High Schools (NOVA, Georgi Dimitrov, Jahja Kemal, Nikola Karev and Orce Nikolov), who gathered for this year's municipal competition in physics. Students unleashed their skills in physics to tackle written problems prepared by DFRM (Society of Physicists of Macedonia), and figure out if they are up to the task to qualify for the regional competition in physics. Students were allowed two hours to solve five problems from selected topics, and it took additional three hours for the teachers to mark their efforts. Long hours for the teachers meant that students have resolved quite a lot of challenging puzzles, and fingers crossed that their work will unlock the next round for them. We're eagerly waiting for the official ranking to be announced by DFRM. Until then, we're sharpening our pencils for the next round. Good luck to everyone!

Knowledge Bowl Team wins 3rd place, CEESA tournament in Belgrade

In the aftermath of this year's Knowledge Bowl finals, we are pleased to announce that the time and energy invested by the students and the coaches were brought to fruition - NOVA's HS KB Team won the 3rd place at the CEESA KB tournament in Belgrade. During the qualifications, our teams defeated virtually all of the highest-rated teams, such as Moscow, Zagreb, and Krakow. In the elimination round on Friday, our teams won almost all the matches. This gave us the seeding advantage of being placed 1st (A team) and 3rd (B team) respectively, out of the 16 teams in total. This trend continued with a winning streak on Saturday, stopped only by this year's winners. The most important thing by far was the unwavering enthusiasm and sportsmanship of our players. Within our first selection, it was Art Saiti's speed and erudition that secured most of the team's victories. Along the same upward line, our B team, led by the experienced Ina Kronevska as their captain, also performed a string of brilliant games. It is worth mentioning that all of the newcomers, Aleksej Kubelka, Marko Kjalasan and Michiel Plomp, fully justified their inclusion in the team, both with their accurate answers and substantial contribution to the team's impetus. It was the concerted effort of Anastasija Markovska, as the A team's captain, Borjan Gagovski, and Emilian Cuzmici, which set up a very high standard of team performance eventually leading to the attainment of the well deserved spot among the three best teams in the competition. New Faculty Introductions 2017-18 - Dr Rachel Deboys

We are delighted to introduce our new High School Psychologist, Dr Rachel Deboys. We are very excited that she has joined the Nova Community and are looking forward to working closely with her to develop the social and emotional support we provide to our High School students. Rachel is a professionally trained Clinical Psychologist with over 10 years of experience working with young people in education and health settings. Prior to moving to Skopje last summer, Rachel was working as a Senior Clinical Psychologist at the UK’s leading children’s hospital in London. There she worked closely with children and young people and their schools to ensure that each child continued to make the best educational progress possible. Rachel has worked within schools across the UK, championing early intervention and support for students’ emotional needs and well as providing training for education staff to develop their awareness of the holistic needs of their students. She is highly experienced in combining her clinical expertise with her knowledge of the needs to students within academic settings. She is passionate about supporting student wellbeing and is looking forward to working with our Faculty, Students, and Parents. Rachel will work closely with our Guidance Counselors and our Student Engagement Co-ordinators. Students, staff and parents can arrange to meet with her throughout the school day. All matters discussed will be treated confidentially. She is a registered Clinical Psychologist with the HCPC (UK registration body) and adheres to their strict code of ethical practice. Rachel is able to provide one off or regular individual sessions for students who may be experiencing difficulties for example with stress, anxiety, low mood, identity, or relationships. Parents will be informed immediately, as per our Child Protection Policy, if any matters of significant concern arise. Students may initially meet with Rachel for up 4 sessions per semester. After the fourth session a review appointment with the student and their parents will be arranged. A joint care plan will then be agreed with regard to the provision of further sessions or any potential need for an external referral for additional support. Rachel will provide advice and guidance for staff and parents in managing the challenges associated with adolescence. Trainings for students, staff and parents will also be arranged to address topics such as exam stress. As a school we are committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment for all of our students, enabling them to develop and thrive as learners with integrity and authenticity. We believe that Rachel’s addition to our Faculty will greatly facilitate our continued pursuit of this mission.

Italian language courses in NOVA

NOVA International Schools continues its collaboration with The Institute Dante Alighieri Skopje and The Italian Embassy of Skopje, and announces the launch of new Italian Language courses for both native and non-native speakers. The courses started on 30th of January 2018 at NOVA ES. There are two groups: BAMBINI ( 3 to 7 years old) and RAGAZZI (8 to 13 years old) The courses will be held every Tuesday and Thursday at NOVA ES.( Bambini from 15:15 to 16:15 and RAGAZZI from 16:15 to 17:15) Check out the photo gallery from the event here
