Monday and Tuesday are non-working days due to the air pollution

1/23/2019

Dear all,  There was a decision taken today by the Macedonian government to close all primary and secondary schools in the country, during Monday, January 21st and Tuesday, January 22nd, applicable to both public and private schools, because of the ongoing air pollution in Skopje.  NOVA has a contingency plan for such extremely polluted days, from moving all activities indoor, to filtering the air inside so that we do not place our population at risk. However, we are asking all of our families to keep their children at home during this time.    Our administration will be at work during these days.  Kind regards, Viktor Novakovski Director  NOVA International School

Nova Green Initiative, for a cleaner and healthier community

12/19/2018

On the 18th of December, Nova International School promoted its 'Nova Green Initiative'. At the event, students alongside Nova leadership and representatives from the company ‘Ekotip’, NOVA's PTA and US embassy community, discussed the need for a cleaner and healthier environment, alongside activities Nova is undertaking in achieving this goal. The event was attended by ES and MS students, who had a chance to learn about the importance and responsibility we all have towards our communities in securing a cleaner environment. The school showcased its current projects, in the fields of recycling and cleaning, together with the technology it has implemented for water and air purification on school campus, and also recognized the support of the PTA and the US Embassy for their continuous support. The presentation was also an opportunity to launch the school's ‘Nova Green Initiative’, intended to serve as a platform for all activities, both current and future, the school will be undertaking for a cleaner and healthier community. Plusportals & Communication, PTA Coffee Morning

12/6/2018

"Yesterday, the PTA Coffee Morning focused on considering an important idea: communication. NOVA parents, students, and teachers communicate across a variety of mediums in the pursuit of educational excellence. However, none come close to the versatility of Plusportals, the system NOVA uses to report on student progress. Parents considered their use of ParentPlus, the mobile application that allows access to Plusportals for parents, over a morning coffee. By the end of the Coffee Morning parents learned how to access attendance records of their children through the application, how to access course materials posted by teachers, how to access alerts from NOVA International Schools, how to quickly send emails to any of their children's teachers and to all of the administrative staff at NOVA, and much more. Hopefully, Parents, students, and teachers can work together to make even better use of the communication technologies that are available at NOVA."

CEESA Cross Country event in Sofia

12/5/2018

CEESA Cross Country, Sofia, Nov 15th – Nov 18th. Anglo-American School of Sofia (AAS) opened from November 15-18 their campus and surrounding areas for the MS and HS runners from 10 international schools. CEESA MS/HS Cross-Country was set against the splendor of the Vitosha Mountain. Amazing number of 160 runners came from American International School of Bucharest, NOVA International Schools of Skopje, Istanbul International Community School, Anglo-American School of Sofia, Pechersk School International, American International School of Budapest, Kyiv International School, Tirana International School, International School of Krakow and Vienna International School. NOVA came to Sofia with 16 students: 6 HS girls, 5 HS boys, 3 MS girls and 2 MS boys. Our runners trained from second week of September twice per week at riverbank of Vardar and on Vodno. In average around 20 students came at training every time what is twice more than last year. The system of competition was to have 4-6 runners per team. A team's first 4 finishers constituted the team's score. If a team had 3 runners, it was assigned a “ghost runner” whose finishing position was recorded as final position + 1.The competition was organized over two days. On Friday the HS ran a 5K route and the MS ran 3.5K through the woods behind AAS. On Saturday, the HS ran a 3.5K route and the MS 2.5K. Both days the races were in a beautiful setting and the routes were a combination of forest paths, uphills, uneven surfaces, and slippery ground. The conditions for running were a bit challenging and suitable for experienced cross country runners but our students did a great job. HS girls got final 6th place out if 10 teams, HS boys were 8th out of 11 teams, MS girls took 6th place (3 runners) out of 10 teams and MS boys (just 2 runners) 8th place. NOVA has also a potential in track and field. In an invitational sprint we had at least one participant in every category. Lili and Sara won in HS and MS category, Nikola was 3rd competing with HS students. At the end we have to say our students were respectful on the course and out of it. They encouraged and supported with cheering our runners and other teams. We were very happy when they announced we won very valuable Sportsmanship! Coaches Kristen and Melita are really satisfied and proud of all students! Check out the photo gallery from the event here

Nova students take part in 'First Lego League' and win 5th place

11/29/2018

This year, the First Lego League challenged our MS kids to “go into orbit”. They were asked to build, test, and program an autonomous robot using LEGO ® MINDSTORMS ® technology to solve a set of missions in the Robot Game. In the past two months, our teams worked together to find solutions for various tasks, all related to the challenge theme INTO THE ORBIT. This season, the teams were transported into space, where they had to explore, challenge themselves, and innovate in the vast expanse of space. The NOVA teams made two robot designs, and programed their robots to do various missions. Within the game, they applied many of the FLL core values: Discovery: We explore new skills and ideas.Innovation: We use creativity and persistence to solve problems.Impact: We apply what we learn to improve our world.Inclusion: We respect each other and embrace our differences.Teamwork: We are stronger when we work together.Fun: We enjoy and celebrate what we do! By exploring new ideas with creativity and persistence to solve problems and a strong teamwork, one of the NOVA teams made it to the high 5th place out of 23 teams from 11 different CEESA schools. We were very proud and truly enjoyed their success. The FLL challenge competition for CEESA was hosted by American School of Warsaw, 15-18. Nov, 2018. We are already excited about the next year’s challenge. Check out the photo gallery from the event here

IPC Geography [movement of goods and natural resources]

11/19/2018

Have you ever wondered what's inside your cell phone? How many minerals are included into those tiny metal parts? Mr. Ray Power came last week at Nova and presented a very interesting and extremely educational presentation to all our fifth graders. He showed realia (rocks/minerals) and videos about the whole process behind iPhone metal parts production. He also engaged the students in a thoughtful discussion about the ethics behind mining, human rights, and child labor. Then he explained the steps of trading minerals from Rwanda and Macedonia. That all connected well as an enrichment to our IPC geography theme of movement of goods/products and natural resources of different countries. After the presentation, we all went outside for an experiment i.e. a demonstration of the process how oxygen is being removed from Tantalum dust for further purification. After this presentation, the students created mind maps of "What's Inside Our Cell Phones?" (63 minerals!!!) displaying all the things they learned including images. This was a very beneficial and interesting learning opportunity for all of us. Check out the photo gallery from the event here

CEESA HS soccer tournament in Bratislava

11/14/2018

This year’s HS soccer tournament took place in Bratislava. Again, the team consisted of new, young and less experienced members, but with very positive self-confidence to do their best. Our main goal was to represent our school in the best possible way and to spend some quality time socializing with the other schools. The tournament took place at X-bionic Sphere Soccer Field, which offers great facilities, and the good weather was an ideal opportunity for a good tournament. After two days of matches we are proud to report that we won the 3th place at the tournament. The tournament was a positive experience for the students: they have shown fair play and played with lots of enthusiasm but at the same time they realized that it takes a lot of practice, discipline, teamwork and serious dedication for better results. On the other hand, they were very pleased and happy to be part of the team and the event itself, having in mind that it was a great opportunity to make new friends and socialize with students from different countries.
