Do the monsters have feelings? (Macedonian: Дали чудовиштата имаат чувства?)
4/19/2019On Wednesday. April 17 kindergartners were exploring this question during Macedonian language class. The highlight of the class was the visit of the famous Macedonian author for children Ms. Biljana Crvenkovska. She introduced the Cyrillic letter /Ч/ (English/phoneme /CH/) to the students through several activities including a read aloud, from her most recent picture word book "Bibi's World" presentation, discussion and coloring, related to the theme. This was a great day shared with a wonderful and resourceful person such as Ms. Crvenkovska.

Nova HS, school assembly [April, 2019]
4/19/2019The amazing day of sunshine on Wednesday 17 April was the perfect day for our Assembly in High School. As the images reveal, it was a chance for all to pause and enjoy time away from academics. We enjoyed a range of performances from our drama department, dancers, the band and a few daring voices including our Head of School, Mr Viktor Novakovski and our Librarian, Ms. AnaTrajkovska. Our time together was the perfect way to remind ourselves of the pending Spring Break, a time for renewal and rejuvenation.

Welcoming the new Nova Boris Trajkovski scholars
4/18/2019This year, for the 15th year in a row, we had the pleasure of bestowing full scholarship awards to three students.
The process started early January, with our team visiting over 20 schools in Skopje, live feed on a TV station and several publications on social media. The result? Over 240 students who entered the first round of testing and 20 students who successfully managed to enter the second round of testing. After a fun day filled with creative, team activities, the NOVA-Boris Trajkovski committee managed to choose three students that represent characteristics that we find in a true NOVA student: leadership skills, team player, motivator. On April 10th at a private ceremony, accompanied by NOVA leadership and representative of the Boris Trajkovski foundation, our three new scholarship students received their certificates and thus helped us in successfully closing another cycle of this eminent award.
We wish nothing but the best of luck and success to our new scholars but also to all of the other brave children that took part and were with us in this important journey.

8th Grade Drama Presentation
3/26/2019Throughout the presentations, the audience was able to see what we have worked on during our drama classes in the last semester. The students have developed an appreciation for the drama art as a significant part of their education. Our goal during the drama classes was not only for the students to play out a certain character, the actual priority was for them to feel the stage, to conquer their own fears and anxiety before public appearances. They had to dig deeper and find their true desires, develop their hidden talents, and they had to challenge them in order to challenge themselves to be more creative and bolder, on stage, and furthermore, in life. In the presentations, the audience had the opportunity to see how an actor prepares before acting; they saw monologues given by a position of a certain object, certain emotion, and nature itself. They saw non – verbal activities such as etudes and mechanisms, and on stage they saw real teamwork.

MS Drama Presentations
3/26/2019For the end of the first semester the 7th grade Drama students have performed a short farce, “Abu Hassan Pays His Debts”, which has embraced their main request, to perform in a comic play. Before the rehearsals the students have been prepared to the stage through different drama activities and exercises. Once the script was chosen, they met with Abu Hassan and his wife, Nouz Hatoul, who were deeply indebted. In order to obtain money, Abu decided to deceive the Caliph, Haroun Al Raschid and his wife, Princess Zobeide, pretending that they both died. Other characters like the two sweets vendors, Ali Wadi and his step-brother Rab Hadaj, and the Palace servants Messour and Scheherade have underlined the confusion and the comic side of the play. All the students have shown their improved acting skills, commitment and effort, which has been widely proven by their final success.

CEESA Girls Basketball in Bucharest
3/21/2019This year NOVA’s HS Girls Basketball team participated in the CEESA Basketball Tournament hosted by the American International School of Bucharest, Romania and competed with teams from four other international schools from Bucharest, Prague, Warsaw and Istanbul. Over the course of three days, our team played six games with experienced, motivated and strong teams. Our girls played hard, behave well and demonstrated good sportsmanship, earning a reputation among the other participants as a small team of only six players (and one girl who supports the team from the bench) that regardless of the score, always tried hard and never gave up. A small team, passionate about basketball, committed to play hard until the very last whistle. We have no doubts that such a mindset helped our girls overcome the pain in their muscles, knees and ankles in order to give the very last atoms of energy from their bodies and therefore deserved all our compliments and made our community very proud.

Fourth edition of the NOVA Writing Pearls
3/15/2019The fourth edition of NOVA Writing Pearls comprises the short stories written by Nova High School students and Nova Middle school students and serves as a powerful testimony to the love of reading, writing, art, and literacy. Established as a project about creativity and imagination, it had weaved four editions which are testaments of NOVA students’ vital capacity to be inquisitive and curious. Through the four books students explored the complexity of life around them, and did the observations with responsible and maturing eyes. They demonstrated the ability to craft real dynamic characters, talk about the universality of loneliness and awkwardness of their age and ventured to exploit the vicarious futuristic settings. Tomeska’s Seventy-Two Full Moons, vividly mirrors the coded existence of problems and dangers in our present civilization while tackling issues of overarching respect - from the one towards each other to the one towards the environment. The scenery only subtly alters in the woods of Zbogar’s Morning Walk, with a scream into the silence, that nothing is same any more. Tanevska embroiders an enormous reminder to the things we take for granted in love and in life, thus we confront perils to lose what we cherish the most. Krstevska’s Acer, paints a powerful reminder that one may end up running after the lost illusions, hugging in vain and dreaming in futility. All stories are pouring with identity, freshness and inspiration. The poems remind of self importance and recognition of own value, the literary bites address the inevitability and ephemeral aspect of time and universe, while the student’s art work reminds that masterpieces for Pearls students are possible and attainable.

His visit to NOVA is a planned part of an ongoing professional learning community effort to refine our standards-based grading (SBG), teaching and learning practices. Myron's visit will offer keynote lectures to our community, targeted sessions for teacher groups, and informal opportunities for parents and students during morning coffee hours. Myron's visit comes on the heels of the international Assessment Summit NOVA hosted this fall, where our community heard from renowned author Ken O'Conner. Myron's SBG support ties seamlessly with Ken's efforts, all in support of NOVA implementing world's best educational practices in SBG, teaching and learning.

Author Liz Haske visits NOVA
3/1/2019The 2-day-visit by author Liz Haske proved to be such an invaluable learning experience for both our students and teachers. We had the chance to look into the process from ideas to published books as well as to go beyond the author’s artifacts and own process to connect with the work of the students. Moreover, the face-to-face interaction has planted a seed of possibility in our youngsters. They understand that writing and drawing are not just academic exercises but can be powerful ways to express and share feelings with the world at-large.

Short message from a parent about Liz Haske visit
2/27/2019Nova students from the EMS had a chance to meet and talk to Liz Haske, the author of "When Worry Takes Hold." She talked to us about how she thinks of her ideas, how she takes her story from pre-writing to publishing, and how her story changes as she goes through the stages of the writing process (pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing). This is a short message a parent shared with the teacher after the visit.-----Good morning Ms. Smth,I wanted to tell you that Hana was so excited and impressed by the visit of the author Liz Haske, she couldn't stop talking about the visit and the impression she made on her. That impressed, that she sat on her laptop and wrote a 4 pages story herself!!! But it is only "a draft" she stressed!! :-). Then she wrote a letter to Ms. Haske through her website to thank her about the visit.Thank you for making this visit possible, and please feel free to share my gratitude this with the administration at NOVA!Have a great day,Aleksandra
