Meet our new faculty members: Kelli Volkman [ES Homeroom teacher grade 4]

9/13/2019

Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia (USA) I always knew I wanted to be a teacher! I graduated Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia with a BA in Elementary Education and received my teaching certification for grades P-5. My first teaching position was in 2nd grade in 2007 in a large elementary school outside of Atlanta. I quickly knew I wanted to continue my educational journey and earned my MA in Reading and Math. In the following years I also earned teaching certificates for Gifted and Talented education as well as in English as an Additional Language. After teaching in the Georgia Public School system for seven years, my husband and I decided to challenge ourselves further by moving overseas to Nagoya, Japan. We were excited and ready to explore the culture and cuisine Japan had to offer. For two years I taught 2nd grade in the PYP (Primary Years Program) as well as Learning Support Co-Coordinator for Elementary. Japan was an awesome adventure… but being so far away from home was difficult. Our next adventure took us to the Caribbean! We spent three years teaching in the sand and sun of Curacao, which is a Dutch island. I thoroughly enjoyed getting more involved in our local community by volunteering for many environmental protection groups. I spent my weekends and breaks volunteering for Save our Sharks, Sea Turtle Conservation, and Coral Reef Restoration Curacao [as a scuba diver I helped grow more corals to make and restore reefs]! The decision to move to Macedonia and join the NOVA community was exciting and easy! My husband and I (Paul Volkman, MS social studies) were impressed with the mission, goals, and community. We are thankful for the opportunity. The NOVA community has already been so very warm and welcoming, and I couldn’t be more excited to begin my newest adventure here in Macedonia. I am looking forward to collaborating with my new colleagues, learning new teaching techniques, and making memories. I am positive this experience will continue to be amazing.

EMS Principal's Welcome

9/2/2019

Stacy Sherman has taken a circuitous route to arrive at her new position of EMS Principal at NOVA International School in Skopje, Macedonia, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. “It is interesting for me to look back and see when and how changes in my life have transpired,” she says. “I have concluded that each moment of life is an opportunity that we may not recognize until much later.” Stacy is excited at the challenge of supporting elementary and middle school students and teachers at NOVA. Although this small-town Michigan girl always dreamed of “going places,” she never thought it would turn out as it has. She married and had two children and worked full time as a stay-at-home mom. But once her kids were in school, she decided that’s where she wanted to go as well. This started her path in education. In 1994 Stacy received her bachelor’s of science degree from Trine University and began teaching 4th grade. “I devoted myself to science and math,” she says. “I wanted to lift students out of their textbooks and into a more exploratory, hands-on experience.” In 1997 she completed her Master’s in the Art of Teaching from Marygrove College. Leaving the classroom in 2001, she took a job helping other educators impart the wonders of math and science to their students. “I really wanted to make a difference,” Stacy says. “I felt that teaching teachers how to ‘do’ science would help to spread the joy of exploration and discovery to more children.” Then in 2003, the opportunity of a lifetime— in the form of teaching 1st grade at Colegio Maya (the American International School of Guatemala)—presented itself. “The director of the school at the time, Dr. Sherry Miller was such a dynamic force in the empowerment of women and has been a dynamic force in my life.” So with her grown children’s support, Stacy put most of her belongings in storage and soon found herself living the dream. “I wasn’t sure which was more intimidating, moving to a new country or working with 1st graders,” she says. “During my time there I realized that teaching 1st grade was one of the most rewarding experiences in my life.” Then just three years later, she moved into an administrative role. With some 365 students in grades pre-K through 12, the school serves “third-culture” students (kids who grow up in cultures radically different from those of their parents), primarily from the U.S. and Korea as well as places from around the world. “Soccer—along with an American education—was the one thing that brought everyone together,” Stacy says. “And kids are kids no matter where they’re from. There were cultural differences, but no cultural barriers. We all came together to play, learn, and solve problems.” While living in Guatemala, Stacy explored her environs with gusto. “I visited villages in the highlands where people still wore the traditional dress of the Mayans; climbed three volcanoes (one of which was still active); and took diving excursions to Honduras, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Panama where I swam over coral reefs and came face to face with grey reef and whitetip sharks.” After 12 years she was ready to return to the U.S. to be closer to her family, and begin her degree in Education Leadership. During that time, Stacy held the position of Lower School Head at a prestigious girls’ school in Pittsburgh, PA. After a year, she took time off to finish her degree and this is when yet another amazing opportunity presented itself. The long winding road took her to Africa, a continent she had always dreamed about. Stacy returned to teaching at The American School of Kinshasa in The Democratic Republic of the Congo. It was here she reconnected with her teaching roots. This experience has helped her to gain a fresh perspective of the expectations teachers face each day. “Living and working overseas has been a remarkable experience that I will never forget,” Stacy says. “Meeting people from all walks of life and cultures has changed the way I view the world. My life continues to be an incredible journey.”

HS Principal's Welcome

8/28/2019

Dear NOVA HS Families, present and future:My insofar life in international education (18+ years) has taught me that studyplace culture matters. Oftentimes, we are awed by socially mediated information on specialized schools known for high-achieving students who go on to earn great personal success in the field of higher education. However, it is not that uncommon for those same schools to lack the resources and steadfast commitment to a healthy and well-functioning studyplace environment. On that note, what I hope we could effectuate, together, in the year to come, is make sure that NOVA High School safeguards a studyplace culture where learning is not merely seen through the prism of marks and percentages, but rather a set of well-articulated school norms that support equitable access to cultural diversity, mental health, and inclusion. Finally, committing to the role of Principal to the HS Division has been a wonderful full-circle journey for me, taking me from an English and Social Sciences instructor all the way to an Academic Advisor and Director of Guidance and Counseling, all within the same physical space, though a different school culture. As someone who continues to believe, firmly, in the tenets of critical pedagogy long established by Paolo Freire, I support constructive dialogue as a basis for all meaningful progress, for afterall, as an educator, I remain open to transformative change.Faithfully,Bela Gligorova, PhD

With the second week of SummerCamp excitement and fun already behind us, we would like to give you an overview of the main activities and highlights. During the second week, the Blue Dolphins, Yellow Tigers and Red Lynxes had the chance to try their hands at several challenging activities: hiking on Vodno including orientational games, practicing precision and self-trust through archery, developing focus, concentration, body balance and self-control through fencing, karate, and yoga, developing team-building skills, learning how to rely on teammates to accomplish goals, and working together to overcome obstacles during the laser hunt. Campers were producing sounds during their Music workshop, and expressing their artistic skills during the Art workshop. Furthermore, during the exciting water games and sports, the campers demonstrated cooperation, fair-play and high spirit of participation. On Friday, they had a chance to relax at the Aqua park, and wrap up one more week of excitement with the Mini Olympiad. The Happy Green Frogs had a similarly eventful second week, with exciting new activities that were enjoyed by all. Their visits to the Amusement park and the outdoor activities allowed campers to build their confidence in trying to overcome new challenges. They were especially enthusiastic during the zoology master class at the Skopje Zoo, where they learned where different animals come from, and the jobs the employees at the zoo perform. They were excellent explorers of nature at the City park, wrapping up their experience with a nature walk, and they learned how to maintain balance through horseback riding. Afternoon sessions included various hands-on activities, water games, read alouds, songs and crafts.  We could not be more proud and happy to see our campers become more confident, seeing their active role by participating in all activities and making new friends. We are certain that we have another fun and exciting week ahead of us. We are looking forward to the new adventures it will bring!  Check out the photo gallery from the activities here
