Meet our new faculty members: Kelli Volkman [ES Homeroom teacher grade 4]

Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia (USA) I always knew I wanted to be a teacher! I graduated Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia with a BA in Elementary Education and received my teaching certification for grades P-5. My first teaching position was in 2nd grade in 2007 in a large elementary school outside of Atlanta. I quickly knew I wanted to continue my educational journey and earned my MA in Reading and Math. In the following years I also earned teaching certificates for Gifted and Talented education as well as in English as an Additional Language.

After teaching in the Georgia Public School system for seven years, my husband and I decided to challenge ourselves further by moving overseas to Nagoya, Japan. We were excited and ready to explore the culture and cuisine Japan had to offer. For two years I taught 2nd grade in the PYP (Primary Years Program) as well as Learning Support Co-Coordinator for Elementary. Japan was an awesome adventure… but being so far away from home was difficult.
Our next adventure took us to the Caribbean! We spent three years teaching in the sand and sun of Curacao, which is a Dutch island. I thoroughly enjoyed getting more involved in our local community by volunteering for many environmental protection groups. I spent my weekends and breaks volunteering for Save our Sharks, Sea Turtle Conservation, and Coral Reef Restoration Curacao [as a scuba diver I helped grow more corals to make and restore reefs]!

The decision to move to Macedonia and join the NOVA community was exciting and easy! My husband and I (Paul Volkman, MS social studies) were impressed with the mission, goals, and community. We are thankful for the opportunity. The NOVA community has already been so very warm and welcoming, and I couldn’t be more excited to begin my newest adventure here in Macedonia. I am looking forward to collaborating with my new colleagues, learning new teaching techniques, and making memories. I am positive this experience will continue to be amazing.
