More than just a Soccer Tournament

The NOVA Middle School Boys recently returned from a CEESA Soccer tournament in Riga, Latvia that can be described as anything but ordinary. Upon arriving to Riga, the team realized that this would not be an ordinary soccer tournament. The first day of the tournament showed that the boys were going to be playing a different type of soccer that day: snow soccer. With over 15 centimeters accumulated (and still more coming) the boys realized they would have to learn how to play the sport in a whole new way. Despite the near whiteout conditions the NOVA Boys showed resilience in the face of adversity. Even with our best efforts we won only one game out of three that day. The following morning the boys had the opportunity to play at the Olympic Center in downtown Riga. We played our first game of the day and narrowly lost to the host school. After a brief respite we prepared for our last match of the tournament against the International School of Riga. It was an intense game of back and forth soccer. The NOVA soccer boys played hard but nevertheless we found ourselves down 3-1 at halftime. After a deep talk about resilience and relentlessness the NOVA boys came out with renewed intensity to tie the game at the end of regulation. Our team engaged in a emotional penalty shoot out filled with tension, frustration, and finally happiness. The NOVA boys pulled away with the win to cap off the tournament. All in all, our students had a lot of fun, made some new friends, experienced Latvian culture and had a once in a lifetime experience.
