Kindergartners explore “teen numbers"

From the Kindergarten Diary: The kindergarten students absolutely love to explore “teen numbers”. As a kindergarten teacher, I wanted my students to have a deeper understanding of how the numbers are made, and my goal was to help them identify these numbers as groups of one ten and some leftovers (ones). We’ve been going through numbers 11 – 19, one number a day. After using a variety of strategies, I’ve asked the students to show me the number 17 using any strategy and any single tool in the classroom they want to. I could not be more proud. The kindergartners were able to show the teen numbers with drawings, numerals, ten frames, counting mats, blocks, small objects such as shells and rocks, sand, play dough and cuisenarie rods.
