CEESA HS Girls Soccer Tournament in Sofia

This year, the annual CEESA HS Girls Soccer Tournament took place in Sofia, Bulgaria. The tournament was played over 3 days, with participating schools arriving from 6 different counties. The venue organization was excellent, as the fields were well suited to the needs of the tournament, official referees were provided for each match, and medical support was always close at hand with a first aid medic in attendance. Games were played on a round robin basis and consisted of two halves of 30 minutes each, with a 5 minute break between halves.

The Supernovas gave their all throughout the tournament and played very good football. This effort is even more remarkable when one considers that these girls do not play in an organized league and have to rely on a two month practice period and only a pair of friendly games with the middle school students to develop their skills.
The skillful and well drilled Huskies from Finland proved themselves to be dominant on the field, managing an 8 – 2 win over the Supernovas. Our girls became motivated and decisive, earning a fantastic first triumph over the Lynxes from Latvia and emerging as the victors, with a final score of 7 – 1. The Supernovas lost to the Wolves from Sofia by a 5 goal difference, but were not deterred when the game against the powerful Dragons from Belgrade took place. Our girls stayed determined and grew more and more confident with each passing minute, although the Dragons emerged as 7 – 2 winners. The match that showed how much heart the Supernovas really had was the one they played against the most powerful and dominant team from Kiev. Although they were outscored by 9 – 1, the girls fought right until the last second. Their performance impressed us, the coaches, and made us proud of the team.
The Supernovas emerged as the overall winners in the match for fifth place, beating the ISL on penalties after the initial match ended in a 2 – 2 draw. This match proved to be one of the most exciting games of the tournament.

Overall, this was a successful and engaging soccer Tournament.  There is no doubt that the girls and the coaches have made many memories together.  The passion for the sport, the dedication, and the effort is what made the 2015 girls' soccer season a memorable one.
